Any time something demonstrates itself as a non-partisan issue, it’s worth paying attention. When a House D who once ran U of Miami and Senate Rs from SEC states are reported to be working together on creating a college sports spending oversight regime, changes to the status quo are afoot.
Some will argue capping coach salaries won’t stop spending because money will find its way into the market. And some will say price controls are the worst things for markets. However, we all know the NCAA is already not a free market, and spending is out of control as a result - which has led to this movement - so such arguments don’t withstand the slightest scrutiny.
College coach salaries are in the cross hairs but so too will other spending as one person involved in the developing effort referenced profligate spending on facilities like min-golf. Will be fascinating to follow how this develops.

Based on the admittedly vague description, sounds sensible to me. Non-profit universities were never good homes for "market" competition, so an anti-trust exemption is hardly a stretch.
On a more local level, provided the caps are not too low, this seems likely to benefit Stanford, insofar as the Alabamas of the college sports world can perhaps outspend us, but will never outclass us - in both sense of the word...on the other hand, we almost surely spend more total $$$ on sports than all but a handful of schools, so...
