Wow, we went from. 6pt lead to an 11pt lead with 0.2secs left in the half. 3FT plus 2 for T on Buffs coach. Terry flopped then made 5FT. 33-22!

Flashback to Billy Tubbs, Oklahoma, a 5-pt technical, and an NIT championship [with Daddy Keefe on the squad...]

Terry deserved that call for all of the other bogus calls that have been called [or not called -- see. e.g., US.C] involving Stanford this season. That being said, I'm now anticipating a second half of biased reffing against us the likes of which we haven't seen in a very long time.

Ummm if it's worse than that second half against USC, we shouldn't even come out of the locker room.

The foul call that Terry got at the end of this half reminds me of the call that Oregon State got against us at the end of the first half last week. Pac-12 refs...

Batey is crying croc tears. He did it on purpose. Total BS. He might regret it now, but he knows what he did.

And now our lead is evaporating again. Lots of fouls on Stanford. Looking bad. Da Silva is out and probably in concusion protocol. Dammit.

You can hear individual Buffalo fan voices laying into the refs, and not in a kind fashion, when a couple of calls go our way.

Of course it's going to be hard to contend if Colorado goes 11/11 from three in this half. They've made all seven of their attempts already.

That Batey buffalo is an emotional wreck. He hits a 3 and then starts crying on the defensive end. He knows what he did in the heat of the moment when he and Da Silva were tangled up and going to the ground. He took his elbow and drove Da Silva's head into the hardwood. Watch the replay. It's clear. Now he regrets it and is having a breakdown.

We're down 5 with Terry going to the line to shoot 2. Under 4 minutes remaining. I wish I could be confident that this team could pull out a win here, but I'm not. We had an 11 point lead at the half. Sheesh.

Now we're down by 11 with 1:40 remaining.

Despite our ~15 point lead early in the 2nd half, I was, unfortunately, confident that Colorado would come back to win the game. We just can't hold on to leads in the second half. Even less of a chance to do it without DaSilva.

This team is shaping up to be a second-half team at home and a first-half team on the road, and I think at halftime of the USC game it might have started to get ahead of itself, and is rutted mentally as a result. The best thing for them might be to stop worrying about NCAA berth, NIT berths, NET rankings, none of which truly come into play until more than a month from now, and simply focus on playing offense at a passable level, without their defense immolating when the offense does play at a good level. You won't win very often when your opponent scores 59 points and goes 8/8 from three in a half. There are no gimmies, no get-well games, remaining on the schedule.

My guess is 19-13 would be good enough in most cases, but that would mean this team would have lost a ton of games to finish the season.
20-12 feels like a better NIT situation given how Stanford would end the season to get to 19-13.

22-11 or something in that range might be enough for the NCAA, but I am struggling to see how this team finishes with a 6-4 type final 10 games.

All of this sounds so familiar. Early in the season everyone claims the team is taking on the scrappy play style of Haase. Team shows some promise in close loses early in the season, with better results early than recent years. Despite that start the team struggles, especially on the road, in conference play. And by early March the faithful are claiming NEXT season will be the season it all comes together for Haase.

And we are not talking about Final Four or anything like that. Everything coming together merely means a trip to NCAA tournament in the #8-#11 seed range.

Injuries were not a key element to Stanford losing games to date, but will probably be a big factor in losing a lot of games for the rest of the season.

Time to swing to next year...yet again.

There is another video taken with the players coming toward the camera. In that view, Batey turns his head toward DaSilva places his elbow on his head and drives the head into the floor. It was a bang bang play and I'd guess that Batey reacted aggressively out of instinct. But, the result is the same. IMO, he was emotional because he knew what he did and not because he believed it was just an accident. Batey's MO is using his large body to bull his way past defenders. This move fit his MO.

I was at today's game, and it was, at different times, terrible, disappointing, and uplifting.

When Oscar da Silva went down and did not move, prompting teammates to frantically beckon the bench for assistance, I felt sick. As posted by Crafter Artisan, the game and the season suddenly did not matter as I worried about a catastrophic injury to a great young man.

Once Oscar stood up and walked off under his own power, instantly creating a very hopeful prognosis, I was able to get back into the game, and of course hoped the team's first half effort would be rewarded. Colorado then got crazy hot and was able to push past Stanford to get the win, although the outcome was not certain until the last 30 seconds or so. Like all but the Kansas game, this one was there for the taking. Alas, after a 4-0 start in Pac-12 play, the team is now 5-5, with two starters likely to be out for at least a couple of weeks, if not longer. Sitting at 5-5, after losing another double-figure second-half lead, isvery disappointing for me as a fan. And that disappointment is compounded by knowing how demoralizing it mus be to lose those games by a team that plays hard every game.

But provided that Oscar enjoys the expected recovery following his concussion/TBI, it is the effort that this team puts forth this season that will stay with me. I find that I have become very emotionally invested in this team's success based on watching them strive. They are far from the most athletic team in the league, and they often struggle to score, but the way they play inspires me.

As well, I was uplifted by the coming together of the two teams to support one another after Oscar left the floor.

Finally, Daejon Davis deserves special mention. Since he was a wild but passionate point guard his freshman year to having become a defensive stopper/slashing guard as a junior, I love the way he does what he can to help the team win. He suffered an injury to his face earlier this year and returned to the game; since then he's been wearing a protective mask. As with other games, today he kept taking the ball to the basket with courage, especially given his vulnerable state. Along with his competiveness, his humanity has been apparent numerous times that I've observed over the past three years, such as in the way he displays concern when an opponent takes a hard fall or in rushing to an injured teammate. When Bryce Wills went down two days ago, Daejon helped him off the court. Today, when Oscar da Silva suffered his injury, Daejon was right there, and was very troubled by seeing Oscar in distress. A warrior with compassion -- what a fantastic combination.

And so in leaving the Coors Event Center, and in writing this entry, I feel good about the experience I had today. And I'm now just hoping to see Oscar (and Bryce) back soon.
