Every Putter Tiger Woods Used In His Career - JJJ - 02-20-2020

Too obscure? At least he's seen in a Stanford baseball cap. ;)

"During his victory at the 1996 NCAA Division I Men’s Individual Championships, Woods used an Odyssey Dual Force 660 putter."

Made me wonder just how many men's golfers have won the NCAA Individual, which goes back to 1897:
Cameron Wilson, 2014
Tiger Woods, 1996
Frank Tatum, 1942

I expected to see Tom Watson's name, but the individual winners from 1969-71 were Bob Clark (Cal State-LA), John Mahaffey (Houston), and Ben Crenshaw (Texas).

Also, Stanford did not win any team championships during the Woods or Watson eras.

I would guess somewhere in the neighborhood of 120 men, give or take a few, depending upon repeat winners, wars, etc.

Not too many repeat winners:
Phil won in 1989, 1990 and 1992 (Arizona State)).
Scott Simpson won in 1976 and 77 (USC).
Ben Crenshaw in 1971, 1972, 1973 (Texas).
Dick Crawford in 1959 and 1960 (Houston).
George Dunlap, 1930, 31 (Princeton).
Fred Lamprecht, 1925, 26 (Tulane).  Fred was the first non-Ivy League winner.
Dexter Cummings, 1923, 1924 (Yale).

No tournament held in 1900, 1917 or 1918.  Two held in 1898 (one won by Yale, one by Hahvahd).

In 1996, the year that Tiger won the individual championship, the Stanford team finished fourth, 19 behind ASU, 16 behind UNLV, and 1 behind... East Tennessee State.

Tiger was the only player under par at -3, four strokes ahead of Rory Sabbatini (Arizona, which finished fifth as a team), six up on Mike Ruiz (ASU) and Darren Angel (UNLV). East Tennessee State was anchored by Irishman Keith Nolan, who finished 10 behind Tiger.

In 1995, Stanford lost in a playoff to Oklahoma State and Woods finished tied for fifth in the individual championship. However, Tiger did win the US Amateur in 1995 (and in 1994 and in 1996), so not all was lost.

Ironically, in 1994, the year before Stanford Tiger stepped foot on campus, Stanford won the national title.

Hey BC, you might want to edit your post before CowboyIndian sees it.

No problem, he’s out counting otters.

Yeah, well, don't ask Notah Begay about that 1995 loss to Okie State.  IIRC, Begay had a very short putt on 18 to secure the title for Stanford and missed it.  That sent match to OT, where OSU won.  Brutal L (and I think that title may have given Stanford a then-record 6th NCAA title that year - but this is all from memory, so I could easily be off on that).

I wonder if that's what led to Notah Begay's odd putting style.  He successfully utilized a unique putting method. Using a putter with playing faces on both the front and back of the head, he putted right-to-left-breaking putts right-handed, and left-to-right-breaking putts left-handed. Begay is the first top player to use such a technique and putter.

Trivia question for you. Who has more career PGA earnings, Notah Begay III or Jack Nicklaus?

Trivia answer: It's Jack, but not by much:

Jack Nicklaus: $5,734.301
Notah Begay: $5,207,339

https://www.pgatour.com/stats/stat.014.html

BTW, that list is missing a few names. Has Nicklaus, Player, Trevino; but doesn't have Ben Hogan. Has J. C. Snead, but not Sam Snead. Has Roger Maltbie, but not Forrest Fezler. Has Jim Thorpe, but not Calvin Peete. Seems to have most of the Stanford pros (Woods, Watson, Begay, Bramlett, Rodgers, even McNealy), but doesn't have Bob Rosburg or Casey Martin ($200k+ in PGA earnings). Has most of the SJSU players (Wiebe, Lye, Cerrudo, Oberholser) but doesn't have Ken Venturi. Has Bob Lunn, but doesn't have Dick Lotz or George Archer.

In today's dollars (which seems to me the appropriate basis of comparison), it's no contest.

But adjusting for inflation is not sufficient.  The sharp upward trend of tournament purses is the primary reason that Begay can appear to be even remotely comparable to Jack.

RE: Every Putter Tiger Woods Used In His Career - Phogge - 02-23-2020

Tiger has many more talented competitors now than in 1996. No doubt that he will notch #83 somewhere but no way he passes Jack.

Thomas, Rahm, Rory if he can make a putt and Dustin are as good as anyone who has ever played. If any reach 10 majors with as many good players out there it will be a surprise.

Yes, and to bring the thread back to its original topic, part of that increase in purses is directly due to Tiger!
