Baseball vs GCU starts tomorrow - JJJ - 02-27-2020

I'm a little lost with no hoops on a Thursday, so I thought I'd point out that we have an 11-game baseball homestand starting tomorrow vs Grand Canyon.

Quote:Notables
  • Stanford returns to Sunken Diamond on Friday, opening an 11-game homestand by welcoming Grand Canyon to The Farm.
  • The Cardinal is seeking a breakout game offensively, having yet to score more than four runs in a game this season. Austin Kretzschmar, Chrisian Molfetta, Christian Robinson and Tim Tawa share the team lead with six hits.
  • There is a youth movement on The Farm in 2020, as five freshmen have started at least three games. Brock Jones leads the group with eight starts while Cole Hinkelman is enjoying the most offensive success, batting .385 with four doubles among his five hits to go with nine total bases.
  • Sophomore Alex Williams has highlighted the weekend rotation for the Cardinal. In 12.2 innings this season, Williams has a 0.71 ERA with 13 strikeouts against just four hits and three walks. Williams was named Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week following his performance against Cal State Fullerton on Feb. 16, when he went seven innings in a 2-1 win. One week later against Tennessee, Williams struck out a career-high 10 batters in 5.2 innings, while not allowing an earned run.
  • Sophomores Brandon Dieter and Nicolas Lopez have emerged as key arms out of the bullpen. Dieter owns a 3.60 ERA, having allowed two runs in five innings with nine strikeouts, including a three-inning, six-strikeout performance at California on Feb. 25. Meanwhile, Lopez is unscored upon in 4.1 innings while walking only two and fanning four in four appearances.

Eight games in and nobody has more than 6 hits? Team batting is below .200 and slugging is .276? Ouch.

GCU seems to be a competitive club. They play in the WAC. Last year they went 36-24, which included a rather lopsided loss to Stanford at their place. This year they are 5-3, which includes winning 2 of 3 from what was #22 Oklahoma State, winning 1 against Oregon, and then in a tournament taking 2 from Fordham but losing twice to Cal State Northridge. This series will be their first games away from their home field.

Yeah, the team is struggling at the moment. It was entirely clear that the hitting was going to struggle to start the season. I wasn't expecting the equal disaster fielding the ball. So far the team has committed 16 errors and allowed 21 unearned runs.

If you want bright spots, well ...
- Soph Williams has pitched pretty well with an ERA of 0.71 in two starts (12.2 innings).
- Soph Kretzschmar has had two (but only two) solid starts at 2B (hitting 0.600).
- Frosh Hinkelman is hitting 0.385 in a reasonable amount of action (3 starts), slg 0.692. Has also had some hard outs.
That's all I got.

Just came here after the disappointing WBB loss.
At least we're up 2-0 M5. I hear Troy Clardy on the broadcast.

All tied up at 2-2, bottom of the 14th.

Sigh. Another loss, 5-2 in 18 innings. 4 errors.

Each team had 3 earned runs in 18 innings.

Tough to expend so much pitching in a loss with games the next 2 afternoons.

RE: Baseball vs GCU starts tomorrow - martyup - 02-29-2020

We must be approaching a record bad start of a season?

RE: Baseball vs GCU starts tomorrow - JJJ - 02-29-2020

1-1 in game two halfway through with an all new lineup (all frosh?) sorry, was checking on my phone, probably off as a result.

https://gostanford.com/sidearmstats/baseball/summary;team=away

We now lead 3-2, T9, with men on 1st and 2nd for GCU. Hang on, Grech!

RE: Baseball vs GCU starts tomorrow - JJJ - 02-29-2020

Grech slams the door and we snap our 6-game losing streak!
Whew!

RE: Baseball vs GCU starts tomorrow - Madera86 - 03-01-2020

Stanford wins, 8-2. Eight hits and no errors.  Another fine performance from Alex Williams, and our first winning streak and series win of the season. Woohoo!.

No errors, but a passed ball so still an unearned run.

Both Saturday and Sunday, Stanford's starting batting order had 8 frosh and 1 soph. On Saturday the frosh got 6 of 8 hits, on Sunday 7 of 8.
Also a frosh starting pitcher Saturday, soph on Sunday.
This is a young team.

Wasn’t that due at least a very small part to the fact that they effectively played a doubleheader from 4pm on Friday?

I don't think so. Saturday might have been but after the win, I think Esquer just went with the same lineup because why not?

I do not think the starting lineup will remain as it was, though. Esquer put Tawa in in the fourth inning. He may be struggling at the plate (though, unbelievably, he leads those with qualified ABs in average and everyone in RBIs), but his defense and position flexibility are too important to a staff that doesn't miss bats.
