Something tells me Rose Bowls are not in the near future for Stanford Football.

Was something telling anyone that they were?

RE: Class of 2022 - Phogge - 05-29-2021

May be time to take a breath. Stanford football did not begin in 2009.

Offering a low rated recruit is not surprising, but offering a recruit with a 18 ACT is very surprising.  I guess scores aren't required so this is the year that a recruit with low scores and good grades can get in.

Which makes what looks like another spectacular failure of a recruiting class that much worse. Stanford should have more opportunities with more better prospects than ever if there are no test scores being required for the next class. My cursory look at things suggests Stanford is doing very poorly and that recruiting - ostensibly because the bloom is off the Shaw program rose - has fallen off a cliff.

Is there any reason to believe this is not the case?

Yeah, I remember Harbaugh doing that one year and getting a committal out of the guy. Not surprisingly he never ended up at Stanford. I think that was the year we had double digit decommits. Old JH was a little bit of a loose cannon on the recruiting trail.

RE: Class of 2022 - Phogge - 05-29-2021

Loose cannon maybe but the talent today pales in comparison to what Harballs accumulated. Not a grad and not a fan of the limitations. Alas.

RE: Class of 2022 - BobK - 05-29-2021

I have a list of the 18 or so decommits that year.

I always thought Harbaugh's genius wasn't so much that he got 4 and 5 star recruits, but that he got 2 and 3 star recruits and got them to play like 4 and 5 star ones.

RE: Class of 2022 - martyup - 05-29-2021

We're going to do fine and our recruits are going to work their asses off and play over expectations.  Then, they are going to graduate fro Stanford with a degree and go take one the world.  And I will be cheering for them all along the journey.

Please define "fine" and how this is going to be the case. Based on my look at 247, Stanford is not in the hunt for very many coveted players.  Perhaps 247 doesn't provide an accurate picture?

Well, we're in the hunt  for a lot of highly coveted players, the issue is just that. We're in the hunt, not sealing the deal.

I cannot do that for you.  One must seek their own happiness on their own terms.  I follow Stanford football, not just because it's my alma mater,  but because I enjoy it.  Life is too short to be angry all the time.  Expecting Stanford to win 10 games every season will lead to stress and anger.  We will play.  We will do fine.  It will be fun.

RE: Class of 2022 - BobK - 05-30-2021

Plus a bunch Marty. Great post

RE: Class of 2022 - Phogge - 05-30-2021

It was fun under Curtice because Stanford was one of three teams that lived by the pass. Of course 1959 NCAA passing leader Dick Norman QB’d three wins and the next year got shutout. In those years we got to see a ton of offense, especially opponents shredding Stanford. No fun under Buddy and Wlat and in 2019. Thoroughly entertained by last year’s gallant effort by a bunch of overachievers. I assume most Stanford players will graduate and do well but I don’t much care about that. No angst re losing but hate being bored.

RE: Class of 2022 - Papa John - 05-30-2021

In my day, it was fun watching John Elway, Darrin Nelson and friends perform their magic. But a cumulative 21-34 record over my five years on the Farm was not so fun.

My expectation is that recruiting will pick up when recruits return to campus, which is soon. The on-campus visit seals the deal for a lot of offers. I don't know that we'll have many more top 15 recruiting classes under Shaw--partially because our cohorts tend to be fewer in number than a lot of other program--but I fully expect us to return to rankings in the 20-25 range.

Today is the first day recruits can visit schools since the pandemic started. Finkley is on campus for an unofficial and 4 star OT Ryan Brubaker is on campus for an official.

Choosing the Toejams over the Cardinal is like asking for Slytherin when the sorting hat tells you to go to Gryffindor.

RE: Class of 2022 - Phogge - 06-02-2021

Choice was easy for a kid looking beyond school. Stanford needs to do more with its NFL vets. Egads, John Lynch made it to Canton. They ought to put up a statue and banners all over campus. But noooooooooooooooooooo.....
