RE: Class of 2022 - Spiny_Norman - 10-13-2020

Stanford need to take a QB in this class, correct? Do the tea leaves look favorable, cognoscenti?

Also I will observe that the offers are heavily weighted towards offensive players at least according to 247 Sports. It's at least 2/3 to 1/3 for offense right now. And several of the defensive offers have already committed elsewhere.

We offered 3 QBs, which is a first. Very clear we're taking one. Two? Dunno. (I doubt it.)

Offers have always been weighted towards offense first. Shaw makes the final decision on offers, and he's an offensive guy. This cycle's offer extravaganza really boils down to an abnormally high number of offensive offers, and a slightly-higher-than-normal number of defensive offers.

Some of the defensive offers committing elsewhere already is nothing new. We offered a whale OLB/DE in small-town Ohio? Of course he commits early on to Ohio State. (I think that's happened in the last 3-4 cycles, funnily enough. Whales from Ohio rarely leave, period.) There is some traction with a couple already-committed guys, though. Some committed as freshmen to different coaches/staffs. That's crazy early.

It's tough to swim from Ohio to California. The water route is really long.

Robert Rogers never could find it.

if only that had prevented a certain swimmer from making that journey........

Well that explains the rapid flurry of CBs.

Was that Pacific Stanford Time?

DL from Jacksonville with a 4.27 GPA. We are P5 offer #13.

RE: Class of 2022 - BostonCard - 11-30-2020

It’s a little disappointing that for a dlineman with 4+ GPA we aren’t one of the first to offer.  It’s not like there are that many d linemen with good grades to keep track of.

He's the first (high) 3* DL we have offered. The other 5 are all 4* guys, and are/were obviously higher up on our board.

I also know of 3 more we are "keeping track of" that we haven't offered yet - we have sent them recruiting mail, pictures via social media, etc. We don't just spray-and-pray offers.

RE: Class of 2022 - BostonCard - 11-30-2020

Fair.  But when was the last time we offered too many defensive linemen?  Even with Harbaugh's spray and pray (LOL) style, I don't recall him pulling any offers from a defensive linemen because we had offered too many.

I get being selective for, say, wide receivers, where we've recruited well of late, or even for QB's which require special attention.  But given our historic yields in converting defensive linemen, would it be a problem if we got all 6 we have offered (we won't of course).

Yes, because staff would take that as a sign that we don't need to recruit DL for another 2 years, causing a gaping depth chasm like the one we're seeing at ILB and about to see at OLB.

RE: Class of 2022 - slide - 12-01-2020

BC -- some of your best humor ever.  Shaw providing the initial offer to a DL recruit with grades.  a unicorn even by Silicon Valley standards.

it is encouraging to see a pulse in our recruiting given the past couple classes.

iirc, NCAA has extended dead period on visits to 4.15.21.  I am hopeful Shaw relents and will allow some Spring official visits to top '22 recruits.  generally Shaw uses less than half of our allotted official visits (and almost exclusively for recruits who have already signed).  use 'em or lose 'em.

RE: Class of 2022 - Phogge - 12-01-2020

Is there no greater sign of complacency the last couple of years than just having half of the visit allotments? I get that Shaw is a great face for the U. Why not create a new job where he becomes the face of Stanford somewhat like a CEO becomes emeritus? There are no more worlds to conquer. He has reached #3 in the final polls, won two Rose Bowls and graduated his guys. The program is tired.

I feel that Shaw is taking the same path that Willingham took after his first (and only) Rose Bowl.  Though in Willingham defense he had a non-supporting cast in the AD and the Director of Admissions.
