Hooper has become the highest paid TE in the NFL until George Kittle cashes in.
He inks with Browns for 4 yrs, $44 M with $23M guaranteed.

Good for him!
Separately, I saw that DeForrest Buckner got traded. Any thoughts on what this could mean--if anything--for Solomon Thomas?

The 9ers were in a bit of a pickle due to little cap room and only a 1st round + late-round picks in the coming draft. And of course, George Kittle will soon be the highest-paid TE in the league (and deserves every penny). They have to pay the man.
It seems in their mind, Arik Armstead ($17m) and an extra 1st is worth more than keeping Buckner ($21m). They certainly couldn't keep both. The new pick, #13, is high enough to take one of the top WRs - a key need - in this absolutely LOADED WR class, while their original #31 can be traded down to replenish their missing day 2 picks.
What does this mean for Solly? More opportunity to play inside. The 9ers have a deep rotation at DL, and he needs to step up and assert himself within that rotation. Time to prove you can stick around in the league, my man.

I think Solly has solidified his status with the Niners, as a versatile non-star who can back up multiple line positions and rotate in to keep the stars fresh. He probably needs to work hard on moving beyond that, if only to avoid slipping back.

Bruckner was traded for a first rounder today So more of need for Solly

It sucks to lose Buckner, but this is how winning NFL teams must operate or they become the Rams. The Super Bowl loss was more frustrating because it was obvious there was no way they were going to be in a position to sign Buckner and Armstead without compromising too much of the roster.
The Niners probably saw a bit more position versatility with Armstead in that he can play outside and move inside with Bosa and Ford on the outside. Not sure Buck could do that. I thought Armstead should have been a Pro Bowl selection last year. Maybe it’s good he didn’t or he would have been even less affordable.
The news was a little disappointing, but at all surprising. My take as a Niners fan is I trust Shanahan and Lynch know what they are doing, so just leave it at that.
It really sucks to part with your drafted players who develop into stars. I wish the NFL had a luxury tax to allow teams to spend over the cap like the NBA does, for players drafted by their teams. This way players can still be free agents and leave if they want, but teams can also afford to keep players who don’t want to leave on the teams that drafted them. As a fan it sucks when guys your team drafts and you grow to sort of become,e attached to are forced to leave.

It certainly sucks to lose a top player
However it’s been true for years now.
Ward now coming back so there’s now room
Hope for Sanders next
Will Staley retire? In any case the Buckner first rounder a LT ?

Niners sign Ward. Saints reup Breese. Tanahill reups with TN, Cousins with Vikes. Brady to leave NE. Panthers give Newton permission to seek trade.
Aside from no fans at draft the league is biz as usual. Big rebuff from Killion in Chron.

Phil Rivers to the Colts.
Tom Brady (anticipated) to go to the Buccaneers.
Will be interesting to see who is worse for the wear, Brady without Bill Belichick or Belichick without Brady.

Next season I'd bet on the latter. The Pats are in a tough spot and having to switch QBs and eat $13M for Brady is a tall order. I guess if they can figure out their LBs the defense could be great again, so that would be some cushion, but defense is really volatile year-to-year.

My prediction is that Brady gets hurt early in the season, plays less than half the season, and retires after the season. He won't reach 1000 yards passing nor 10 passing tds.
