Bay Area School Closures Extended Thru May 4 - Snorlax94 - 03-25-2020

The districts from the 7 Bay Area counties extended school closures today through May 1. The schools currently plan/hope to re-open May 4.

I guess one benefit of living in an area of relatively severe restrictions is that it provides a disincentive for people to travel here.

the decision was made largely by the county health officers. They know what is happening better than we do. So I guess it could be better, it could be worse. They could’ve not extended the closures, they could’ve closed schools for the year. But I think it’s mostly bad news.

With less than a month after May 1, the disruption of reopening would be significant even if it were safe. It could only make sense if they extended the school year. Colleges seem to be ahead of the curve in terms of going online for the rest of the year.

Colleges can. Middle and high-schools probably could as well. Most schools that are trying distance learning are going to come up to speed over the next few weeks. As you get younger it gets more difficult.

Well, Newsom said he expected the closures to last through the school year.

Interestingly, the San Ramon Valley Unified School District finally is providing homework etc online. Unfortunately, it allegedly doesn't count for anything and isn't required as not all kids have access to the internet.

I don't really understand what the school district administrators think is going to happen. You would think they would listen to real science. Many districts fought the closings to the bitter end. I know Oakland did. Even if cases miraculously are down in early May, sending kids back to school at that time would cause another wave of infections. 100% of the time at least one child in the class room is carrying a virus. When it is a virus without herd immunity you are asking for trouble. 



Even in a family of 6 kids, 87% of the year someone in the family is contagious.

Although children do not seem to get as sick as older adults, some do get very ill. Out of the 2000 children the Chinese were able to identify as likely or definitely infected (there were certainly more they did not find), 125 were seriously ill, 13 of those became critically ill, and 1 died. 

Infecting the majority of children in this country would overwhelm Children's hospitals and Pediatric wards, and even worse kill off a large number of older relatives. Schools should have closed earlier and they need to stay closed until at least September. Even with that, we need to be ready to close them again next winter.
