Foreign Secretary Raab may need to take charge for the time being.

Hope he recovers, so once this is all over he can get the full bore roasting he deserves. Herd immunity hasn't been working out too well for Boris.

Not surprising. I always thought the stated reasons for his admission to the hospital (persistent fevers requiring additional testing) were somewhat specious. Also, I wonder if the Queen's speech, delivered yesterday, was made in knowledge that the government was harder hit than had been let on.
I hope for a speedy recovery for Johnson.

I wish no one ill. But there is irony in this.

I'm very hopeful that if he's getting top quality care that he will eventually make a full recovery. That said, this video, from March 3, suggests the possibility that he came may have come into contact with a large viral load, since he claimed to have shaken hands with every single patient in a coronavirus ward he visited...:

Greater initial viral exposure as a contributor to worsened outcomes is an interesting idea, but with no empiric evidence for covid19. Much more likely is a person's specific immune response to the virus being dysfunctional or even hyperactive (the cytokine storm patient). And for whatever reason, males have it worse off than females. Boris probably also in the obese category, another poor prognostic factor.

I have no wishes for Boris one way or another. He engineered Brexit for his finance cronies and has now earned whatever fate will befall him.

But for the sake of global stability, I wish him a speedy recovery. If England falls into greater chaos, that hurts everyone. If world leaders fall ill and some even die, that could harm global stability, increase panic, and open the window for countries to exploit the situation.

That was on March 3rd... + 2 weeks, would be March 17th. He was diagnosed about 10 days ago? So likely not related (unless he had some early invisible immune response and he later had a second exposure and Covid is acting like dengue. Yeah, probably/hopefully not).

There is, and I very much disagreed with the British strategy. That being said, still hope for a speedy recovery.

If Boris Johnson were to die from COVID-19 I guarantee that many people who have been the most resistant to taking this seriously will do a quick about face. It could be the difference between continued half measures and a serious response from leaders around the world.
On another note, the Chancellor of the Exchequer who has become quite popular for his financial program in response to COVID-19 is Rishi Sunak, a Stanford GSB grad. Some are arguing that his performance is putting him on the short list for #10.

From the UK's initial ICU data, he's got about a coin flip's chance. Maybe a hair better since he's relatively young. And presumably he'll be getting the best the nation can give him. Even so....grim.
For that data-

Hopefully the bar to put him into ICU is much lower than the bar for the above cases.

I don't think that's the case. He'd be on camera if that were the case. Probably good odds he's intubated already or will be within hours. Early intubation does give better results it seems.

I hate to admit it, but I actually like Johnson. He’s not a dumbass as he is portrayed, and he does seem to genuinely care about people. The initial pandemic response was weak, but he quickly changed course when it was clearly not going to work. Compare that to some U.S. governors who continually drop the ball without learning much.if anything from their and others’ mistakes.
Anyway, I saw a Dr. interviewed on Sky News who said Johnson is not in ICU because he is PM. He is in ICU because he condition warrants it. I mean does anyone seriously think Johnson or his advisors want him ICU of it can at all be avoided? Not a chance. The fact he is there tells you how serious his condition is.

I didn't agree with his policies on Brexit (though as a non-Brit, this is not really my business), and he is a bit of an opportunist, but I agree, there is something... charming about him.
I thought this commercial for the recent election (a parody of Love Actually) was brilliant.

Yeah, the commercial was terrific. It had additional impact by the absolutely humorless reaction of the British establishment.
I don't know enough about Brexit to have a right to an opinion. I do know the British public has signaled its determination to leave in every way possible. It's a mandate that should be respected, and apparently is being so, after a long period of whining and disbelief.

I had been avoiding the COVID-19 forum for some time because I early on found it rather depressing in terms of the finger-pointing, partisanship, bickering, etc. I came back today to look at a few threads. I ran across this. My mistake.
This has got to be one of the most distasteful posts I have ever read. Unbelievable.

52-48 was hardly a mandate, especially when exactly what kind of Brexit they were voting on wasn't described. Now that being said, after a few years of diddling, they did just have an election where one of the candidates campaigned on getting Brexit done, and that candidate won decisively, so any uncertainty that may have remained is now gone.
Boris Johnson was educated in Eton and Oxford. From his bio, "He read Classics at Balliol College, Oxford, where he was elected President of the Oxford Union in 1986." I don't know how one could be any more establishment than that.

They just updated. He's still in ICU but it doesn't sound like he's intubated. He'd been given oxygen but is not on a ventilator.
