Another (Wacky?) Idea: Virtual Fans in Empty Stadiums -

I don't know whether sports could safely be done in empty stadiums, so I'm not necessarily advocating we have college sports at all in '20-'21.
But if we do... here is my idea: virtual attendance.
Once of the unique qualities of sporting events relative to Netflix is that sports are live and it is a more communal experience because you have to watch it as it happens (except for DVRs, I know). If you're there in-person, you are experiencing it with other fans, seeing things unfold collectively, cheering together.
Already some TV experiences have a supplemental side experience, and in a way Cardboards already do this when they post among themselves during games. I think it could be fun if they basically created a way for fans to Massive Group Conference Chat during TV broadcasts. Some of the fan noise should be piped into the stadiums, and fans should be able to hear other fans yelling as the game plays. People could even be "seated" in virtual sections.
It could be fun. I would do it, although my wife would not be happy.

The NFL was already starting to do this. Thursday night games were being broadcast on Twitch.tv, a very popular online platform for video game streaming. There was a live chat feed and stat tracking. IIRC the game I tuned into for a little bit had ~30k concurrent viewers at the time, which for Twitch is very high (akin to the numbers for some of their more popular streamers).

I think that whether there are college sports this fall will depend on if the students are allowed back.
If it is deemed not safe for students to be on campus and they are taking classes remotely in the fall I'd be pretty surprised if a University would let athletes back on campus and have any sporting events.

Baseball will play, possibly, all thirty teams in Arizona.

I was thinking the same thing back when it looked like the winter tournaments might be cancelled. Streaming and chats are nice and all, but there's something about the cheering and background din you still miss there. Get a massive 10K person Zoom going; that will bring in the fan sound.

Oklahoma State coach Gandy wants his players back May 1. He wants the revenue. I don’t know who he expects to play against.

More on Gundy:

Quote:"The NCAA, the Presidents of the universities, the Power Five conference commissioners, the athletic directors need to be meeting right now and we need to start coming up with answers," the Oklahoma State head coach said inside a near hour long teleconference that included a 20 minute monologue to start off. "In my opinion, we need to bring our players back. They are 18, 19, 20, 21, and 22-years old and they are healthy and they have the ability to fight this virus off. If that is true, then we sequester them, and continue because we need to run money through the state of Oklahoma."

Presumably. If he doesn't get furloughed.
