A family friend, healthy 40 yo, died a couple months ago from the flu, decompensating within days. Cytokine storm was the hypothesized reason.
Steroids and IL6 blockers may help some patients with it, but only marginally it seems.

We've known this for a while. Described by MD's in China.
This is why anti-inflammatory drugs such as hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin were thought to be possible therapies for this issue, as were steroids and IL-6 blockers. The ICU docs I've heard from really aren't convinced that any of these therapies are helping. Large rigorous studies are needed.

There have been a lot of concerns that immunosuppressed patients were doing poorly. Not necessarily it seems. It probably is dependent on exactly how someone is immunosuppressed - the immune system is complex.

Thank you. Left wife and two young kids. Very sad. Can't imagine now living through this so soon after.
