Number of Cases in SCC Per 10,000 People - Snorlax94 - 04-10-2020

One of my major peeves about recent Bay Area news headlines is when they highlight the number of cases per county, without normalizing for the number of people in that county. OMG!!!! SCC has 1442 cases and SF has only 724 cases. But wait, Santa Clara County has 2.2x as many people...

So SCC PHD released on its dashboard the number of cases in SCC by city, which is kind of meaningless without considering the relative populations.

Below is a chart normalizing #cases/10,000 people in SCC, with Wikipedia's list of top employers for that city. I know -- there are many flaws -- just because a company is HQed there, doesn't mean everyone works there, etc. But still, I found the data interesting.

Throwing out cities that were too small for data, it turns out San Jose and Palo Alto have the most cases per person, Cupertino and Mountain View have the least. In fact, San Jose and Palo Alto have more than 3x as many cases per person than Cupertino.

Having a large part of your labor force work for tech companies that can have employees telecommute looks to be a brobdingnagian advantage (as is being semi-rural, like Gilroy).

[sorted from most to least cases per 10,000 residents] (the numbers like 2x in the employers reflect a large dropoff, ie, if the #2 employer has twice as many as the #3 employer, I put a 2x next to the #2 employer
