Glad David Shaw could join me this morning...and even more glad to bring you the chat on a fresh new TreeCast. Shaw updates us on how life and work have been going the past month, how he's battling the biggest and largest unknowns he's ever dealt with as a head coach, his role as the head of the NCAA's rules committee, and his recruiting message in this day and age. Other topics include Christian McCaffrey, what he learned from watching the XFL, and what he's looking forward to in the season ahead...whenever it kicks off.

My greatest takeaway from a "this is a new reason for optimism" standpoint, is what he said about campus visits. As some of us have lamented, the lack of Spring official visits has seemed detrimental to recruiting.

In this podcast, Shaw talked about how they are finding ways to do what you might call virtual visits in new ways. It's almost like there was a mindset  that if a guy won't visit in person, that's pretty much all there is to it. Now, my read is by trying to accommodate those who would have visited, they are effectively expanding the net beyond those who would ordinarily visit on their own, to those who wouldn't visit if the only way they could is flying across the country to do so. So instead of 25 guys visiting on their own, the program is hosting 50 guys who would and wouldn't come on their own, but have enough interest to check out Stanford all the same.

Will be interesting to see if the program puts more emphasis into virtual visits in the future, and if getting an expanded pool of total visitors in person and virtual, leads to more applications and possibly more coveted players available to sign in future classes.

Thanks for the interview, Troy - was great to hear more in-depth discussion from the man himself.

Have to agree with OF here that the virtual visit piece is most intriguing. There are certain prospects that Stanford has missed out on in the past few years due to the visiting policy. If this time allows the staff to develop a good virtual visit that can be used to show campus, facilities, etc. to future prospects in the same boat, I think it would be a boon to recruiting. Swaying just one or two more of those "ones who got away" per class to apply could make a tangible difference on the field, as they've usually been highly-rated guys.

hopefully the development of a high-quality virtual tour is underway.  a former player parent suggested it years and years ago -- even before Shaw openly opposed spring official visits.  the former player parent had suggested it as a way to broaden our base to players/families who could not afford to come out on their own dime to camp or tour at the coaches behest (aka the not quite self-selectors).

with USB already giving virtual tours in lieu of spring official visits due to covid, (again) hopefully we are not too far behind.

We should mail out some VR goggles (as loaners to avoid running into NCAA limitations).  Then we could publicize both the campus itself plus some of the VR programs we have for QB's.

Thought his recruiting answer (and the message contained within) stood out, as did his thoughts on being the head of the rules committee. I still think adjustments need to be made on how the game clock is handled, though. Glad we touched on McCaffrey too, although the news of his contract extension came out a few hours after our chat!

Checked it out on my afternoon jog/walk yesterday (gotta work back up to running the length of the whole podcast!). Spring regular games idea was knew to me. Learn something new every day!

Thanks Troy! Great interview! I agree his answers on recruiting, as well as "what other teams' players are doing now with no football and only education" were awesome.

I'd have liked to hear about what he's focused on during this time as far as his own development goes. Everyone can improve on something! Maybe something to ask other coaches you may get to speak with in the coming weeks?
