Supposedly Apple is interested in the Pac-12 Nets media rights.  Not that they are worth much now.

AppleTV+ needs to do something if it wishes to be relevant.  It's handing out free subscriptions, but IMO it doesn't currently have enough content to get people to tune in let alone pay.

If I were Apple I'd use a suitcase of cash to go for NFL Sunday Ticket.  The contract with DirecTV is up after this season, and AT&T is making noises about not renewing it.

The Pac-12 Network could be another piece of that puzzle, but I can't imagine it would be anything more than a drop in the bucket in terms of overall viewership.

Quote:During one meeting, Apple executives told the Pac-12’s school presidents that it was only interested in the conference’s primary media rights package, not a digital one. ESPN and Fox currently hold the rights to the conference’s main package, paying a combined $250 million per year on average to the conference.

So maybe that means they aren't looking to bid for the Pac-12 Network, but just the football and basketball games that are currently shown on ESPN/ABC/FOX/FS1.

Having our tier 1 games off of ESPN/FOX is only going to increase the howls of derision from the people who currently have a hard time accessing our games that end up on the Pac channels.

OMG, if Scott did this, Pac-12 fans might literally put his head on a pike!

Apple TV+ is $4.99 a month and free for a year with the purchase of an Apple device.  The number of households with ESPN peaked at 100 million 9 years ago!  It was down to 83 million last year (and that was before COVID-19 evaporated all live sporting events).  I wouldn't be surprised if in another 10 years, the ESPN (on cable) is an afterthought, and all the action is online.

Just reminded me to cancel my ESPN+ subscription. Thanks for saving me $5
