Sad to hear. He was president when I arrived on campus, and I saw him speak at least a few times.

Condolences to his family. Apparently had been living in a dementia facility in Redwood City for the past two years, and contracted the virus there.

Very sad news.
Here’s a Donald Kennedy memory that came to mind recently:
On another thread, a few people voiced their disappointment that Stanford’s name was being dragged every time anything bad happened that was loosely affiliated with Stanford — if the seroprevalence study was flawed, somehow something like Theranos would get brought up.
When I arrived on campus, Kennedy was still president and Stanford was still in the midst of the indirect cost issue. It seemed any time any aspect of the university was in the news, it’d be linked to the ongoing indirect costs.
Around Big Game, Kennedy penned a humorous opinion piece, speculating what sports coverage might look like (paraphrased because I can’t find the original)
With 12 seconds left, quarterback Jason Palumbis passes to receiver Ed McCaffrey. Stanford, which is currently being investigated for the reimbursement of its indirect costs, will attempt a two-point conversion.
I remember his energy, his love of Stanford, his humor, his support for Stanford Athletics, the expansion of Stanford under his leadership, the connection to Washington DC he brought, his advocacy for the study of environmental issues, and his desperate, desperate attempts to discourage dangerous shenanigans during Big Game.
I will miss him.

Another anecdote about Kennedy (indirect).
My wife's grandfather, who was a professor in the History department at Stanford had a cardiac arrest. Fortunately he survived, and when he regained consciousness, the doctor tried to assess his mental status.
Doctor: "What's your name?"
Wife's grandfather: "Wayne"
Doctor: "Great. Do you know where you are?"
Wayne: "I'm at the hospital... Stanford hospital"
Doctor: "Yes. Do you know what date it is"
Wayne: *Is pretty close on the date*
Doctor: "Good enough. Who's the President?"
Wayne: "Kennedy"
*puzzled looks from the doctor *
Wayne "Donald Kennedy. You asked me for the president. He's the Stanford president"
Doctor: "Oh! I meant the President of the United States"
Wayne "Oh, that's George Bush, I think"
