What's your daily news regimen? (Plus now at 50K deaths in the US) -
Leftcoast - 04-24-2020
I'm curious about how people are following the US CV response now that we are in a long period where each day seems the same? Lately each day has been Groundhog Day as we're stuck in a flat period where new cases/deaths have flattened but not waned. So how do you stay informed but not obsessed to an unhealthy degree?
I am purposefully trying to limit the amount of time spent virus watching. I scan the Cardboard's forum but no longer read each thread. Additionally, I do a quick check-in on three sites daily - National (Washington Post), Statewide (LA Times) and Local (SCC site). I've also cut out looking at most national TV news and coverage of the White House press conferences or Federal response. This alone does wonders for lowering stress levels.
What's your daily CV news regimen?
Here's my rundown for today:
Nationally, we've now crossed the 50K threshold for CV19 deaths in the US. While the daily death rate has leveled off at just under 2000 we are still seeing ~12K deaths per week and will hit 100K in 4-5 weeks unless the rate dips.

From a statewide perspective, testing spiked in the last two days as reported in the LA Times with the reason given as "new methodology". At first I found this encouraging but it looks like this is a one-time spike as the state catches up after changing how they reported multiple tests to the same person. Anyone know more on this?

Locally, Santa Clara infection reporting remains stagnant at 20-35 new cases per day and 2-5 deaths. Today's numbers are 35 new cases and 3 new deaths. It also looks like some of the unused "surge" hospital capacity has been removed indicating the local public health officials are confident we've seen our peak.

Back in January, I would read Straits Times, South China something or other, Taiwan News and I think the UK Telegraph or some such as there was virtually no coverage from US media for the latest cases. Oh and also reddit's China_Flu thread, which while it had a TON of the usual reddit stuff, had some occasional high signal news links. Oh right, BNONews was the best at updating the latest case counts and having links to official case updates.
Now, I've lost track of all those overseas pubs and mainly stick with CNN, FoxNews (for opposing viewpoints), Politico, Reuters and recently a late night check in on Yahoo News (which aggregated the early SCC death before any of the other national sites). Also i started a Twitter list to follow some apropos "experts". And of course local and state public health for latest numbers.
And of course this board.
No TV for me.
I definitely find myself more productive and useful when I'm not knee deep in all this muck, but I can't resist. =/

Each day I read the NYTimes, CNN and SFGate. I’ll take a quick scan of the Santa Clara County Dashboard, CA State News Releases, and SJ Mercury News.
Sometimes, I’ll scan news from other regions — latimes, Honolulu Star-Advertiser, St Louis Post Dispatch, occasionally The Economist.
Btw, I don’t think SCC cases have been flat, I think there’s an encouraging trend.

Morning
Worldometer - to see the USA's numbers by state
CNN - to see if anyone famous died or if POTUS changed policies
SFGate - to see if Gov Newsom has updated our statewide policies
I watch the youtube intros of different late night comedians in their at home series. In theory that could be about anything, but normally it is largely about POTUS' COVID statements.
Almost every other organization I might follow will send e-mails if any COVID news impacts their operation.
Mid-Morning
Then Gov Cuomo is much watch TV. Very informative and only 45 minutes in duration. Probably will not do that going forward as NY has a decent handle on COVID19 now, and I don't believe the northeast consortium will move away from stay-at-home before the west coast group.
I was watching the POTUS conference, but dropped that as it was clear the show was more about ratings than distributing actionable information to citizens. Though I watched today as I was very curious to see how he would try to defend yesterday's position that human poisoning was a potential COVID therapy for his team to research.

WSJ has some of the best journalism on Coronavirus (quantity, quality, and with good coverage of business impacts, which is a key element). The opinion section is clearly slanted to the right but there are some read Le op-Ed pieces.

The improvement in this area has been more than offset by the increases in SoCal and Central Valley.

On the SCC dashboard: they changed the reporting methodology, so the last 5 days' numbers are interim numbers, they will increase as more reports are received. Makes it look like the trend goes straight down to zero, but it won't. Yet it does look like it's trending down.

WaPo, NYT, LA Times, which has actually improved significantly I think in the past year. Politico and 538 here and there. And then a few covid adjacent Twitter follows.
California is still in the thick of it. SoCal is still at a plateau, and possibly increasing actually the past couple days.

For me, NY Times, Sac Bee (a quick read most days), 2006alum's fantastic Twitter feed (mostly retweets of virologists and epidemiologists), and the Covid19 subreddit (this is essentially just a feed of new scientific papers, and it's heavily moderated. I just use it to find new preprints and papers).
I have yet to find a single virus tracking dashboard/site that I like, so I'm working on my own. Will share a link if I ever finish.

Please do.
I really want to find one that graphs not only countries but states and covers both cumulative and daily for cases/deaths/hospitalizations.

I start out my day with Facebook and Twitter. I know this does not reflect well on my ability to prioritize my mental health or my personal schedule. I see the conspiracies and the hand waiving and the burrowing of heads in the sand and I get angry. Frustrated. I might check this board for a sanity check to remind myself that not everyone is blindly repeating what their dear leader or media outlet tells them they should think. Then I try to work. But I come back over and over again throughout the day. By the evening I get into arguments with facebook friends or random people on twitter who are spreading dangerous and unfounded claims, only to realize that it is now the middle of the night and I haven't convinced anyone of anything and that I am losing sleep and failed to complete all the real work I needed to get done that day. Then I down a cold brew coffee to take the edge off (ran out of alcohol so I work with what I got), and then try to go to sleep. But I just drank coffee so I can't fall asleep. So I lay in my bed with my phone scrolling and getting angry. Then I fall asleep.
The next morning I do it all over again.
But don't worry, starting tomorrow I am going to avoid facebook and twitter and actually get some work done.

WSJ for national view
Merc for local news
BBC TV for world news with significant US component. Ive given up on US cable news. Too biased/dumbed down. At least in the evening when I watch.
My doc likes this website to track infection spread, although he questions some of the accuracy. Thinks its directionally valuable.

We have a COVID tracker at work (unfortunately internal or I would share). There's an automatic literature search that they run through and curate. Right now it is generating about 1000 articles a week. Most of them they can dismiss out of hand; they probably narrow it down to a couple of dozen "interesting" articles, and create a digest summarizing a handful.
I was already getting the New England Journal, JAMA, and a couple pulmonary journals TOCs and "recently accepted articles". They all have started sending dedicated COVID updates.
I also get the FiercePharma newsletter, as it tracks industry trends.
I'll echo chrisk on the WSJ. It's expensive and but I get an electronic subscription through work, and it is high quality.
NYTimes has made most of their COVID-19 coverage free.
The Economist is always a great value. I paid for a three year subscription last year, and it is worth every penny.
On my near daily walks (used to be on my commutes), I listen to podcasts: NPR's Up First, the 10 min NPR news digest, Marketplace, more Economist, and the fivethirtyeight politics podcast. I don't get through everything, but I can stand listening at 1.5x speed.

That's the goal. It will probably be US only for now though.

The NY Times makes the underlying data by county and state available via github.

Thanks akiddoc.
Is there a graph for states in there? Best i can find is stats for any particular day? Maybe I'm missing the appropriate section.
