Stanford vs. Notre Dame 2015 on FS1 this evening at 5 pm pacific - Spiny_Norman - 04-27-2020

One of the most emotional games ever at Stanford Stadium. Stay until the end, I promise it will be worth it.

Since we have lots of time on our hands, I figured this begs the question:  Was this the greatest field goal in Stanford football history?  Undoubtedly the most memorable in the short life of Stanford Stadium 2.0.

I go back a ways, and these are the dramatic ones I recall:

1972 Rose Bowl.  Rod Garcia stuns Michigan 13-12 after the ridiculous safety call on James Ferguson by the Big-10 ref.  I admit I only saw this on TV (was a freshman in HS).  And there was some time left on the clock, so it wasn't the end of the game.
1974 Big Game.  Guy Benjamin has 26 seconds and gives Mike Langford a 50 yard attempt.
1975 at USC.  Mike Langford hits a 37 yarder in the Coliseum as time expires.  John McKay comes up 2,003 points short of beating Stanford in his last chance.  And I saw this in person!  I can still visualize someone on the field behind the goalposts, in a blue shirt, raising both arms as the ball traveled past him.
1979 vs. UCLA.  A freshman named John Elway gives Ken Naber a 56 yard attempt.  It scrapes the left upright, but on the inside.
1990 Big Game.  Please clear the field, the game is not over!
2010 vs. USC.  Nate Whitaker atones for his missed extra point.  Don't get hurt in the celebration!
2012 at Oregon.  On national TV.  A Rose Bowl becomes real.  And thousands of green and yellow shirts declaring "We Want Bama" become an instant embarrassment.

I still have to favor Ukropina's 45 yarder, I'll admit.  It was fun shaking Bill Ukropina's hand as I was going onto the field.  Believe me, I was not the only one.  And I did read this tidbit later - that Bill told Conrad that this was a moment he'd never have again in his life, and he should enjoy it to the fullest. Conrad didn't make it back to the locker room for an hour.

Any other FG I missed?

I don't care if it was just an extra point... Derek Belch, USC 2007.

10 lead changes in that game, Senior Day, two top 10 teams. Just a sensational game.

And here is the coda - JB Long interviews Hogan a week after the game. I get a lump in my throat every time I hear Hogan talk about his dad.

Garcia’s field goal and I saw it through an Arriflex viewfinder. Other random thoughts that day... Chuck Muncie on the Stanford sideline a couple of weeks before being poached by Mike White...the fake punt to set up a touchdown...the talent of John Winesberry before the knee injury...Mike Simone’s fearlessness...

Better to be lucky than good.  And Stanford (and Shaw - who evidently had no end game plan) were bailed out by a very dubious replay review giving ND the TD with 30 seconds left.  And I remember thinking real-time that Kelly should have accepted the offsides penalty to run another player or two before scoring.  And in truth, Stanford should have been in "ole D" mode on ND's last TD play anyway. Was there any was Stanford was going to stop ND from going in for that TD?

But it all worked out in the end.  And good for Ukropina for the clutch FG and kudos to Hogan and C-Mac, who had excellent games.

Oh man, that 2010 game winner over USC almost turned into a disaster for my family.  The game was the night before my sister's wedding and I missed most of it during the rehearsal dinner and small afterparty.  But my big sis was cool when she saw me sneaking game updates on my phone and told me to put it on TV, allowing us to witness the game-winning drive.

I jumped for joy, as did she. I actually lifted her in the air in celebration only to lose my balance and send her flying toward the corner of a piece of furniture, which she thankfully missed. Her head just cleared by inches. And that's the story of how I almost sent my sister to the hospital on the night before her wedding.

Steve Horowitz had two in the '71 Rose Bowl, I think. FtOSU and Woody, too!

RE: Stanford vs. Notre Dame 2015 on FS1 this evening at 5 pm pacific - Phogge - 04-28-2020

Horowitz had three to beat UCLA in 1970 9-7. Because of the letdown after Ferguson’s mental error and free kick back to Michigan with only a few minutes to play the Bunce to Miles Moore and Winesberry passes and the Garcia kick stand out over all. I get that most around here weren’t born yet and have no memory of that spectacular comeback.

He was a star at Tulsa Booker T Washington High when I was growing up about 50 miles away and a huuuge fan of local high school football. I think the first time I heard of Stanford was when he went there. "Why not OU?", I probably thought at the time.

I regret that I never met him before he passed, just so I could be an 8 year old fan again and shake his hand.

That was just a great gama. The completion to Cajuste with 15 seconds left has to be one of the greatest clutch plays in Stanford history. And Ukropina must have had ice water in his veins. Wow.
