Baseball Trivia - BobK - 04-30-2020

Counting the 1950s as the oldest decade, 20 MLB players have played in 4 decades

Who ?

RE: Baseball Trivia - BostonCard - 04-30-2020

A few off the top of my head:
No idea on the 50's - 80's players
60's to 90's
Nolan Ryan
Carlton Fisk
70's to 00's
Tim Raines
Ricky Henderson
80's to 10's
Omar Vizquel
Ken Griffey Jr.

14 to go.

BC

Follow-up question.  Are there any players that would become four-decade players when MLB restarts?  I don't think there are any active players left that played in the 90's, but I'm not sure.

McCovey
Minnie Minoso

RE: Baseball Trivia - BobK - 04-30-2020

Your got 6.

Bartolo Colon retired one 2018. He was the last to play in the 1990s

Hints
One actually played 5 decades but pitch hit only in the 5th
Napa Valley
Fighter pilot
Several lefty pitchers

RE: Baseball Trivia - BostonCard - 04-30-2020

Minoso is the guy who played in 5 decades (qwerty got it); he pinch hit in 1980 at age 54!

Jaime Moyer is one of the leftie pitchers.

Bobo Newsom.

Eddie Collins.

RE: Baseball Trivia - BobK - 04-30-2020

Collins before 1950 so no Wilhelm
no

Yes on Williams and Newson

RE: Baseball Trivia - Mick - 04-30-2020

Good question.  Of those who haven't been mentioned, I only know Jim Kaat.  What about knuckleballers?  Tim Wakefield?  Cy Young? Grover Cleveland?

RE: Baseball Trivia - BostonCard - 04-30-2020

Jesse Orosco
Mike Morgan
Tim McCarver? Did he squeeze one last season in 1980?

RE: Baseball Trivia - Phogge - 05-01-2020

Good call BC. Had five AB’s in 1980 for the Phils.

Wilhelm didn't make the majors until he was 29.  And in his rookie season with the Giants, he went 15-3, finished 4th in MVP voting.

Here's a question: Which MLB Hall of Famer made the fewest all-star teams, while playing exclusively in the All-Star game era? (post-1933).

RE: Baseball Trivia - Phogge - 05-01-2020

Phil Rizzuto.

RE: Baseball Trivia - BobK - 05-01-2020

It The Scooter

Yes McCarver and Kitty Katt

Two were stars of the 50s
Another same HS as my dad lol

And 4 more 7 total to go

RE: Baseball Trivia - Phogge - 05-01-2020

His broken big toe speeded the end of this HOFer's career? How did it happen?

RE: Baseball Trivia - BobK - 05-01-2020

He just slud into third Peewee

Ok 4 are
Jerry Reuss
Jesse Orosco
Mike morgan
Rick Dempsey

Last three

2 from the 50s.
One from Napa

RE: Baseball Trivia - Phogge - 05-01-2020

Nope. Dizzy Dean. Struck in the big toe by a liner in the All Star game in Griffith Stadium. Kept pitching on it and changed his delivery resulting in arm trouble and finis in a few years.

RE: Baseball Trivia - BobK - 05-01-2020

My comment was Dizzy talking to Peewee Reese on the Game of the week.
I win

Hoyt Wilhelm is the answer to my favorite trivia question. What Hall of Famer hit a HR In His first At Bat and that was his only HR

RE: Baseball Trivia - BobK - 05-01-2020

Ok final three
Bill Buckner from Napa
Washington Senator 1B Mickey Vernon
And the great 300 game winner Early Wynn

Here’s one for you long-suffering Giants fans:

Name 2 SF Giants who are among the all-time bottom 12 MLB career OPS+ “leaders.”  (Each has >3500 PAs)
