So this season is a salary drive headed elsewhere for the Stanford alum.

With Buckner gone, it's time for Solly to step up and shine. That 49er offense should give the defense plenty of rest as well.

My guess is they'll shoot for around $3 mms. to $4 mms. to resign Thomas.

Unfortunately Solly hasn't lived up to his first-round billing. He's a fine backup/rotational piece, and if he were a later selection the whole "bust" label wouldn't even be a conversation.
Right now at $9m he has the 5th largest cap hit on the team behind Jimmy G, Dee Ford, Sherm, and new signee Trent Williams. (Armstead's contract extension doesn't really start costing the big bucks until next season.)
Agree that some team - maybe the 49ers, maybe not - will still want to sign him for a short deal at a couple million a year after this. $9m for a rotational DL isn't exactly great ROI, which is a bummer. But hey, at least they're not paying Todd Gurley and Brandin Cooks $33.5m to play for other teams!

Thomas will be lucky to get $2 million after 2020 if his production is on par with first four seasons. Most NFL players earn less than $2M annually. Thomas is at this point a backup in the NFL and backups don’t earn much relative to stars or high first round picks.
I should add Ronald Blair is a better player and he’s at $2.1M in 2020.

The Niners have a couple of young linemen who were hurt and could shove Thomas to waivers. Kentavious Street and Julian Taylor. Pretty cheap too this season.

And they got that UDFA from Nebraska, Darrion Daniels, 6'2" 340 pounds. Bad stats on tackles, TFLs and sacks, but clogs the line like crazy. Niners guaranteed $80k in salary with a $25k signing bonus. So...they like him.
