Apparently a nurse practitioner attesting that her experience with PPE was "sporadic" did not fit with the President's reality. And in any case it was the fault of an administration that hasn't been in office for three years. I'm old enough to remember when Republicans complained that Obama was blaming Bush for the great recession.

Any politician that takes over any country around the world could easily blame COVID19 for a sub-par 2021. Most of the current leaders will try to blame COVID for bad 2020-2021 results too, but that will be harder for those in charge now if some countries around the world rebound quickly.
When you had "Loaded up with gowns" in the subject I thought you had inside knowledge that perhaps the Stanford AD was getting the student athletes that left early in the last year or two to "return" and take a bunch of S/NC Spring Quarter classes to graduate this quarter.

The audacity of that child to blurt out that the emperor has no clothes! How far we've fallen, from the halcyon days where we were outraged over a tan suit on a black man in a white house.
Am I the only one losing faith in America's ability to do anything other than concede defeat to the virus?

Well you know better than that. We won't concede defeat. We will claim we defeated the greatest and most powerful invisible enemy this nation has ever seen. We will have fended off the worst attack on America in our history. We will claim victory! We will claim victory even though the past administration [insert excuse].
It costs nothing to claim victory despite evidence to the contrary.

My faith in America's ability to claim victory is higher than ever.
The newest trend will be to claim that many of COVID19 deaths in the USA are fake news.
Anything less than 2 million deaths???? VICTORY!
And BTW most of those deaths were not really from COVID.

No, you're not. Hundreds of millions are losing their faith in our government. Although I question whether conceding defeat is the best way to describe it. Our leadership is the real-life version of the public sector idiots in the disaster movies, the mayors who order the scientists to ignore the shark, piranhas, etc. It's more blindness, plus corruption and incompetence, than conceding defeat. IMO.

Related to gowns: it seems the UK ordered 400k PPE gowns from Turkey and fast-tracked their transport...only to discover that the gowns were not usable as they were not up to standard.

Not unlike Jared Kushner's fumbling hunt for PPE.

How do you, with the full backing and resources of the United States federal government and its president, fail at something as simple as PPE procurement?

Quote:An increasing number of conservatives are convinced the medical community and the media are inflating the coronavirus death toll for political purposes, despite nearly all evidence indicating that, if anything, the figure is an undercount.
of course, motivated reasoning affects both sides...
Quote:The result is that, like many things during Trump’s presidency, the death toll has become politicized. A recent Axios-Ipsos poll found 40 percent of Republicans said the death toll was overreported, while 65 percent of Democrats said it was underreported. The poll noted that people who watched Fox News were more likely to believe the death toll was overreported.

Is it really motivated reasoning for a democrat to think the number is underreported? All evidence I've seen so far points to the death count being too low.

I am waiting to see how FoxNews reports on the first COVID19 case in the West Wing.
Given that the West Wing was loaded with people without face masks or social distancing for weeks I can't help but wonder how many more will have COVID19 now that at least one employee tested positive for the virus.
Fake news, alternative facts, lamestream media, hoax are all ways to deflect inconvenient truths, but the virus doesn't care about any of those things. Just bounce around from host to host. The closer they are the easier it will be to bounce to the next host.
I wouldn't want anyone to get COVID19, but it would be a helpful national wake-up call if those most inclined to dismiss the virus suddenly are sporting masks. It will be a lot harder for most to claim COVID19 is little more than a typical seasonal flu if even the White House staff is running around in face masks in May and June.

It is particularly concerning because taking car rides (especially without masks) is, unsurprisingly, a known method of transmission.
You’re very close to other people in a car and there is so little ventilation, and air could easily flow from the driver back to the passenger.
It’s also scary go think that we cannot stop exposure even with the highest standards of testing, healthcare, etc. I also worry how widespread Covid is among the armed forces given the tight living spaces and shared eating and training facilities.
How many days after exposure until a negative test result gives a definitive all-clear?

Probably a few days from the potential exposure in question. If the reports about the valet's interactions are accurate the tests over the weekend are likely key.
Maybe President Trump should take hydroxychloroquine tonight?
What do you have to lose?!? Take it!

Based on this analysis, the numbers in NY at least, have not been significantly underreported. Lots of other places have seen an excess of deaths not accounted for by COVID deaths. But NY it is pretty much what you expect, which makes sense since Ny reports probable cases as COVID related even if there is no positive test.

I'm not sure how to square that with
this one which disagrees. Maybe because the NYT piece is continuously updated?
At any rate it doesn't really matter if one place or another is accurate, in general all evidence points toward the estimates are an undercount and we won't really know how badly for a while.
