Women's Tennis: Returning Seniors - ColoradoTree - 05-13-2020

So, we don't yet know what Emily Arbuthnott and Emma Higuchi are going to do, but we do have some updates from some of our big rivals.

That UNC senior class that has been building toward this year for a national championship run? Yeah, they're all coming back. Shucks.

UCLA's Jada Hart is also coming back for a sixth year, since she'd previously medically redshirted.

We're going to have an improved team next year, but UNC will have a killer team. Doesn't mean they can't be slain, but will take some doing and a lot of off- and in-season improvement

They need to get on with their lives. Besides, the third wave of Covid-19 is probably going to wreck their season anyway.

I think she said she was strongly considering it and looking at grad school. I inferred from that interview that she was likely to return, but I don't think it was a slam dunk.

Oh, and Pepperdine's Ashley Lahey is also returning. We might need to just assume that if there's an elite senior, she's coming back. The uncertainty surrounding the pro tour this year sure changes the calculus.

FYI, the ITA Regional awards are in, and Emily Arbuthnott was selected Most Improved Senior for the Northwest Region and Emma Higuchi won the Cissie Leary Sportsmanship Award. 

(Other awards: the Arthur Ashe Leadership/Sportsmanship Award went to WSU's Melisa Ates, Rookie of the Year went to Cal's Haley Giavara, Player to Watch went to Mariia Kozyreva of St. Mary's, Senior Player of the Year went to Eastern Washington's Marta Heinen, and the Community Service Award went to the Wazzu team (with the honorable mention going to Gonzaga).)

Congrats to Emily and Emma!

Happy for the awards, but I wish Emily's was named the "Most Improved Senior Who is Returning for a Fifth Year" award.   :)

Feels like the senior awards were flipped. I didn't think Emily improved all that much this year, but I can't think of a senior in the region who was better. (Cal's best players are juniors and freshmen, WSU's Bayerlova is a junior, UW's Wong is a junior, SMC's Kozyreva is a junior, etc.) And I will confess I have no idea about the EWU player, but she's not ranked, so not sure how she's the Senior POY in the region over Arbuthnott. 
Oh, and Bianca Turati from Texas is not coming back for another year. No word yet on her sister Anna, but that is the first big senior name I can think of that has opted to turn pro or move on rather than come back for the bonus eligibility year.
Miami's Estela Perez-Somarriba is returning.
