I did not want to speculate without foundation, but given the nature of his medical retirement and living situation after graduation, my first thought was CTE. So, so sad. Football needs to figure this out because it is getting harder and harder for me to watch a sport knowing that someone on the field has a decent probability of ending up like Hoffpauir. :(

I'm curious if anyone here has listened to this podcast interview of Zach from just this past September:

Just deeply, profoundly sad.
I was devastated to learn that the joyful young man that Coach Shaw held up as a model of how to approach life was suffering from anxiety and depression the entire time, and that what appeared to be joy was instead him trying to cover up his misery. The other health concerns he had (meningitis, Valley Fever, Chronic Lyme Disease, insomnia) certainly complicate the picture--to be on a regimen of 30 pills a day is certainly striking. The father's statement that it wasn't suicide was as clear as can be, but Zach clearly had a far more complicated health situation than I knew.
I hope he is at peace and that his friends and family find whatever peace they can in the hours and years to come.

When first seeing the Hoffpauir news, my immediate thought was brain injury from football, but it does seem a lot more complicated than that. Football certainly doesn’t cause Lyme disease and the other maladies attributed to him.

You need to listen to the podcast episode. Here's the episode link (from Langdude's link) that more directly gives you a download link and tells you when the episode aired: Sept 9th, 2019 (download the mp3 and play it back at 1.5x speed if you're like me).

Zach sounds pretty well put-together compared to some former college football players I've had the chance to meet. He's very honest and articulate in dissecting his issues, which really makes his passing tragic. I wish I had his awareness when I was 26.
The SJMN article mentions a tick bite and Lyme disease, which is really quite unfortunate given that Lyme disease seems to be rare in Arizona (but Rocky Mountain spotted fever -- also transmitted by ticks -- is not). Then again, it doesn't say where Zach was when the tick bit him.
Zach references Shannon Turley...doesn't tell us anything new, but does reinforce a lot of prevailing opinion given our lack of knowledge about the situation.
He says that the Denver neurologist doesn't believe in CTE (doc works with the Broncos)...that might be a weird thing to say for a football doctor, though kind of on-brand for the NFL.
He had a lot more to give.

I did, but it didn't give me the impression that he was continuing to struggle with it so badly. Seemed like he was on top of it, but I guess that can be fleeting.
When this awful news came out, combined with the lack of comment about cause of death, my thoughts immediately went to mental health issues because I had listened to this podcast.

Not sure it's particularly sad, given alternative bandied about.

Depression and anxiety (essentially twin sons of different mothers) is a mental health crisis that has gone largely ignored. Especially the younger gens.
