My personal view is that it's still too early to be making these kinds of decisions, but if universities are going to have fall on-campus enrollment, eliminating all fall breaks to reduce nationwide travel, and pushing the schedule to start as early in the summer as possible and end as early in the late fall as possible, makes a lot of sense.

So effectively, ND is saying we will take students on campus and try to hold classes. If things go well and there are no outbreaks on campus, we don't want to send students home for Thanksgiving where they can be around more potentially infected people, and then bring them back to campus before the semester ends.

they also appear to normally have a fall break where people probably scatter, it was 19-27 Oct this year, which they are not having this fall

That's an interesting strategy re: trying to get in fall semester before a potential second wave hits. The quarter schools could do the same if they started right after Labor Day. The week before Thanksgiving would be finals week, and students would be home around November 20. If the second wave does hit, faculty and staff would have about five working weeks (need to allow one week for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's holidays) to go to online instruction for winter/spring.

Given the slower pace of reopening in California, it's hard to imagine any CA colleges or universities being allowed to adopt this strategy--plus the faculty would have to agree to it. But it makes sense to me.

Stanford has talked about bringing only a portion of the students on campus per quarter, with classes conducted on a hybrid basis, some students socially distanced. The GSB has talked about having half the students in class at a time (classes meet 2 days a week, students attend in person one day, online the other), thus class promos would not be as crowded.

According to admit.stanford.edu, admitted freshpeople had to send in a non-refundable deposit of $200 by May 1 (June 1 for transfers) in order to save their spots in the incoming class. In addition, if a student committed to Stanford is holding a place past May 1 in the freshman class of a college other than Stanford, their Stanford admission may be revoked.

That's a pretty heavy commitment considering that some students may not be able to get to Stanford if travel restrictions are in effect. Also, some parents may decide not to have their child attend an online college--don't know if Stanford would save their spot under any conditions.

I agree this makes a lot of sense. COVID is more likely to be a lot worse in December than early September so may as well get them on campus and classes finished before the seasonal uptick happens in Q4. I wonder if Stanford is considering a similar approach.

Agree. Hard to figure out why CSU decided not to open so early. Hard to believe California will be the only major college athletic area to stay closed.

Last week we got notified that Santa Clara plans for in-person instruction but cautioned that there will be restrictions and conditions that are still being developed.

That's interesting. I thought it was unconscionable, what they were charging for U of Phoenix-style internet training classes. My guess is that they received a backlash, but perhaps more to the point, I have more than a few friends who have indicated that this will be a gap year, if their children cannot attend classes in person. I'm friends with a Cornell couple who have a daughter that is a rising junior and a son who will enter as a freshman...but the parents have indicated that both will take off a year if they can't have the full collegiate experience.
