Cooking the Books: Florida edition - OutsiderFan - 05-19-2020

If states really are falsifying their numbers, the deaths - that can't be hidden - are going to be higher than any projections, people will lose faith in governments, and the reluctance to engage with others will prolong the economic slowdown. This idiocy has no peer. But what really pisses me off is that these same people wanting to bury the virus truth were bellowing mad at China for doing the exact same thing.

Evidence of Florida manipulating the data - akiddoc - 05-19-2020

I had heard several reports that Florida's government has been trying to distort the numbers.

Merged the two threads.

Interesting that this thread seems to have withered so quickly, with everyone presumably believing the initial reporting and moving on, when, perhaps, that wasn't the entire picture:

What's the phrase?  "Too good to check"?

Yes, and people in power have never lied about employees' behavior to justify firing them for political reasons.  Entire books have been written documenting these sorts of whistleblower cases in government.

Also, if she refused to cook the numbers, wouldn't that be insubordination?  I don't see how that's exculpatory for Florida.

PS If you want to document something political, please try to use a non-partisan source. I read plenty of left-wing websites, but here I try to link solely to mainstream news sites. You're not going to convince people on the other side of the political aisle with the National Review.

Stats in California are hard to quantify, I notice, varying from source. If your political bias is one way or the other, you call them 'cooked'. Otherwise, you accept the difficulty of being accurate in these matters.

Having worked with ArcGIS before, I disagree with NRO's characterization of the software.  GIS stands for Geographic Information System, and it is a backbone that can underpin lots of different mapping products, but you still have to build a website with it and program how it will display the information.  ArcGIS is a tool, not final product.  It would be analogous to saying "I made this apple pie from scratch" and someone taking issue with the fact that you didn't grow the apples, mill the flour, or churn the butter.

That's not a comment about the rest of NRO's arguments.

That's a lot of information leaking out of the State of Florida regarding a personnel issue.   Normally after a firing, an institution will remain quiet about details about the firing or the past performance of an employee, citing the privacy of such information.

Not so here, even pointing out prior arrests & pending legal issues.

All that smoke may be because someone is fanning the flames, cooking the story.

P.S.  I find the SCC and other similar dashboards to be a real pain.  You can get the information as a table (good), but you can't download it (nor copy/paste except line by line).   It is also the case that archive.org's archive is useless as the daily data (that takes a half minute to bring up on the page, even though it updates about once a day) isn't archived.   I AM glad that the county allows us to see the data, but I wish it were presented more conveniently.

So, is AP is a sufficiently non-partisan source for you [see post above]?  I tried to find some follow-up reporting by boingboing.net [the original source for this thread], but came up empty.

But I guess you're right, since disgruntled former employees have never lied about what led to their firing.

And, FWIW, I'm not trying to convince you of anything, as I'm pretty certain your mind is irreversibly made up.  Frankly, I see much more likelihood of success in trying to convince Teejers that Shaw was right at the end of the Fiesta Bowl...

Actually, I think we won't know what really happened in Florida until there is a thorough, independent investigation.  I don't expect Desantis to do this.   Maybe that'll happen if the fired employee sues.
