New Baseball Trivia - Phogge - 05-21-2020

I think this got lost in another thread.

Tinker and Evans and Aparicio and Fox are two keystone combos (Short & 2B) in the Hall of Fame. There are 18 more in the Hall. Name them.

Fun question.  No real idea.  Lazzeri and Koenig, I think.  Morgan & Concepcion?  Did Schoendienst play with Marty Marion? Robinson & Pee Wee Reese? Rogers Hornsby and...some shortstop somewhere.

That's a tough one.

Evers/Tinker (Cubs)
Aparicio/Fox (White Sox)
Joe Cronin/Bobby Doerr (Red Sox)
Eddie Collins/Luke Appling (White Sox)
Phil Rizzuto/Joe Gordon (Yankees)

RE: New Baseball Trivia - Phogge - 05-21-2020

Collins had gone to the A's in '28. Appling debuted in '30 but a good guess BC. Some obscure pairings tomorrow including one I never would have caught.

Yeah, was going by trying to remember famous SS's and 2Bmen on the same team at around the same era. I'm guessing there will be a bunch who played out of position.  There are also a bunch of famous pairings where at least one of the players wasn't in the HOF (like Morgan/Concepcion mentioned in this thread).  For example Vizquel and Robbie Alomar played together but Vizquel isn't in the HOF (yet).  Other famous pairings: Joe Cronin/Buddy Myer (Senators) - Myer is not in the HOF; Gene Alley/Bill Mazeroski (Pirates) - Alley is not in the HOF; Billy Rogell/Charlie Gehringer (Tigers) - Gehringer is not in the HOF; Ozzie Smith/Tom Herr (Cardinals) - Herr is not in the HOF; Alan Trammell/Lou Whitaker (Tigers) - Whitaker is not in the HOF.

RE: New Baseball Trivia - Phogge - 05-21-2020

Gehringer is in the HOF, Rogell is not. As a matter of fact I was once asked to name an all time team and Gehringer was my utility infielder. Ahead of Morgan.

My team:
IB Gehrig
2B Hornsby
SS Wagner
3B lajoie
OF Ruth
OF Mays
OF Williams
DH Musial
OF Cobb
Utility Gehringer.
SP Walter Johnson
Koufax
Mathewson
Grove
RP Rivera
RP Fingers
M McGraw
O Veeck
GM Gabe Paul

RE: New Baseball Trivia - Mick - 05-21-2020

Travis Jackson and Rogers Hornsby, for the one year they spent together on the Giants.

RE: New Baseball Trivia - Phogge - 05-22-2020

Good catch Mick, a bit obscure but even more obscure was Hornsby and Miller Huggins.

Here goes:
Frankie Frisch with Travis Jackson, Dave Bancroft, High Pockets Kelly, Rabbit Maranville and Leo Durocher.
Durocher with Hornsby, Tony Lazzeri, Kelly, Freddie Lindstrom.
Hornsby with Jackson, Huggins.
Bobby Doerr with Lou Boudreau and Joe Cronin.
Joe Gordon with Boudreau and Phil Rizzuto.
Pee Wee with Jackie Robinson and Billy Herman.
Robin Young and Paul Molitor.
Cal Ripkin and Roberto Alomar.

Note: San Francisco native George High Pockets Kelly was primarily a first baseman but played other positions and teamed with Frankie Frisch and The Lip a few times. Kelly has also been described as the least deserving HOF member.

RE: New Baseball Trivia - Phogge - 05-22-2020

It appears that Bucky Harris played one game at shortstop with the Tigers at the end of the ‘29 season. Gehringer probably played his usual second base that day.

It is also possible that Dick Williams played games at second while Reese was at short for the Dodgers in 1956. Williams was used by Alston all over the field in a utility role.

RE: New Baseball Trivia - BostonCard - 05-22-2020

Kicking myself for missing Alomar/Ripkin.

Who's your catcher?

Was Lajoie really a third baseman?
