His career highlights at AF but not including 2019 for some reason - https://goairforcefalcons.com/sports/football/roster/isaiah-sanders/8485

Junior year - "Played in eight games, starting five … starts came vs. Florida Atlantic, Utah State, UNLV, Boise State and Army … third on the team in rushing with 466 yards and six touchdowns on 120 carries."

Senior year - he only threw 5 passes and only rushed 10 times.

Looks like 2 seasons ago the starter Donald Hammond was injured for a few games and eased back in a bit, then last season remained healthy.

Good to see on two fronts.  1) We can get a grad transfer!  2) We need depth at QB behind Mills. He certainly has more experience and could beat out McKee and West for the back-up spot.

RE: Grad Transfer - PVTree - 06-03-2020

He will be wearing number 0. Have we had a player with that uniform number before?

I was just about to say the same thing. I don't remember seeing a #0. In the last decade I remember our numbers starting at #2 since #1 is retired.

The QBs have been numbered anywhere in the single digits or teens a la NFL numbering. Factoring in the retirements of #7 and #16, and the unofficial retirement of #12, we still have #18 and #19 available.

RE: Grad Transfer - CompSci87 - 06-03-2020

#0 is just becoming legal in college football this fall.

RE: Grad Transfer - JJJ - 06-04-2020

#0 was basketball (Orlando Ward) and baseball back in the day (Oddibe McDowell of ASU). But Keith Jones went to 00 after his return.

RE: Grad Transfer - Phogge - 06-04-2020

And there was always Johnny O at Cal. Olszewski. That’s for Outsider Fan.

RE: Grad Transfer - PVTree - 06-04-2020

Our own KZ Okpala wore the 0 two seasons ago.

RE: Grad Transfer - CompSci87 - 06-04-2020

This will be a long thread if people start listing all the #0 and #00 players they remember in all sports. In many sports the numbers are or were legal for a long time.

Only NCAA football has had a recent rule change from disallowing to allowing them. Does anyone know if college football allowed #0 in the past? Cal's web page about Johnny Olszewski shows him wearing 36 in college.

#0 has been legal in college and pro basketball for a long time, maybe forever. Does anyone know if it was ever not allowed in basketball? NCAA rules consider 0 and 00 the same, so you can't have both on the same team. The NBA used to have that rule, but changed it.

If Wikipedia is to be believed, 0 and 00 were legal in the NFL only until 1973. I gather players who already had those numbers (like 00 Jim Otto) were allowed to keep them. Otto played through 1974.

I don't know a thing about baseball, etc.

Here's a list of the most famous players in MLB history who wore each number:

I love the Cardboard so don't take this as a negative comment, but this is a pretty typical thread where we have pretty big news (first grad transfer in a few years) and there are only a couple comments on the football impact and three times as many comments talking about history (of jersey numbers in this case).

RE: Grad Transfer - SamuelMcF - 06-04-2020

I hear ya.

Sanders did have a couple great games in 2018 when he started against UNLV (awful defense) and Boise State (very good defense).

UNLV:

Highlights (mostly of Sanders in the middle/end):

The Boise State game highlights don't include Sanders besides a couple handoffs, which is bizarre because he threw for 2 TDs and ran for another one.

I think that was originally because the first numbers went with the batting order, so the 1927 Yankees batting order and their jersey numbers were identical:

1. Combs (.925)
2. Koenig (.702)
3. Ruth (1.258)
4. Gehrig (1.240)
5. Meusel (.902)
6. Lazzeri (.866)
7. Collins (.825)
8. Dugan (.683)

Oddball statistic for the 1927 Yanks.  Pitching staff strikeout leader Waite Hoyt only struck out 86 in 256 innings.  Other pitching oddity is that they used a five man rotation (Hoyt, Pennock, Shocker, Ruether, Pipgras) with Wilcy Moore and Myles Thomas making starts when the other starters needed a day off.

BTW, the OPS for the 1927 Yanks was legendary.  I left their OPS by each name in parens.

I guess it's good to have an another available QB. But I'm a bit skeptical about whether he will ever play meaningful snaps for us. Maybe he could see the field as a change-of-pace guy who can run the option in short yardage situations or something like that?

RE: Grad Transfer - Phogge - 06-04-2020

He still should have a four year service commitment. God bless his service.

So another offensive player whose presence on the field telegraphs to the defense what the play will be?

Actually...and this is assuming there's a season in 2020 (which strikes me as unlikely)...I think this is a big acquisition. Why? Because, as excited as I am about Davis Mills, if he makes it through an entire season without missing significant time due to injury, it will be his first. And, I doubt Shaw breaks with his history of not playing true freshmen QBs (McKee.) That leaves us with West...which is why I'm grateful to have this transfer.

UPDATE: just watched these highlights and I'm pretty excited about this kid. He looks like he could be a Pac-12 starter to me. Granted, these were just highlights but he certainly appears to have some game. He should make a heck of a back-up.

I understand that assumption and yet..

Now players can play a number of games without using a year of eligibility.   As I type this I don't know how that will play out if a season gets reduced from 12 games down to 7 or 8 if an outbreak emerges in the USA in mid-October.

Also, for a true freshman it would seem almost ideal to get them some real game experience while also removing noisy bands and fans from the stands.
