What about Hank Luisetti?

RE: All-Time Stanford Basketball Lineup - Phogge - 06-10-2020

People are ignorant about history. So as that old guy said we will repeat it. Thus the popular at one time, “That was so five minutes ago.”

Keeping Liusetti off invalidates the entry. For two seasons he was the best player in the world. Stanford hasn’t had a guy that good ever.

RE: All-Time Stanford Basketball Lineup - BobK - 06-10-2020

Missing Hank means not a very good effort

Never heard of him until this, and just looked him up. Wow. And so sad, per Wikipedia:

Luisetti contracted spinal meningitis while serving in the Navy, ending his basketball career.[5] He never played in the NBA, but "in 1950, the nation's sportswriters voted him the second-best player in the first half of the century."[5]

Probably explains why us whipper snappers haven't heard of him.

And I find these kinds of lists silly - intergenerational comparisons are almost impossible given changes to the game, especially for players before there was a lot of video footage. What's the point? Best to do by era than "all time."

Serena Williams would smoke Margaret Court, just as Roger Federer would smoke Rod Laver. Different eras, different equipment, different training, etc.

Former Stanford football coach, Clark Shaughnessy, revolutionized the game of football as we know it today.

Hank Luisetti, being the first player to shoot the jump shot, did the same for the game of basketball. Leaving him off the list is absurd.

Luisetti needs to be in there. Not sure what his position was, but put him in at the 3. Randle loses out because Knight was a better point guard and Lichti was a better 2. Ergo...
1. Brevin Knight
2. Todd Lichti
3. Hank Luisetti
4. Adam Keefe
5. Brook Lopez

Under consideration: Chasson Randle, Josh Childress, Casey Jacobsen, Rich Kelley

There are three Stanford players in the Naismith Hall of Fame. I would think they should at least be considered for an all time Stanford team.

The three:

Hank Luisetti (already discussed)

Jim Pollard - guard or small forward. Was 1942 All American and top scorer in 1942 NCAA tournament despite missing the final game due to illness. Stanford career cut short by WWII. 5 times NBA champ. 4 times NBA All Star.

George Yardley - forward. Was good at Stanford, but probably better in the NBA. 6 time All Star in 7 seasons. Third team All American in 1950. Led NBA in scoring in 57-58 at 27.8 ppg. Retired at age 31 to be an engineer.

George Yardley is the answer to a pretty important NBA trivia question. Who was the first player to score 2000 points in a season? George Yardley in 1958

RE: All-Time Stanford Basketball Lineup - BobK - 06-10-2020

Jim Pollard. “The Kangaroo Kid”. brobdingnagian vertical.

I like the 4 the poster named other than Hank.

Oldies but great players
Ron Thomsic
Tom Dose
Rich Kelley
Kim Belton
Claude Terry

Many of them underhand foul shots.

Heck, even Bobby Riggs smoked Margaret Court.  Which prompted Billie Jean to saddle up and shut him up.  I remember Billie Jean was quoted at the time to the effect that "I didn't think this was necessary, but then Margaret had to go out and play like a donkey."

I remember a pretty good Guard by the name of Mike Bratz. Played in the NBA for a while.

Arthur Lee off the bench in a three guard lineup with Liusetti and Lopez up front. Jacobson, Childress, Yardley, Keefe to provide reserve. Madsen gets three minutes to clobber a couple of opponents.

As stated above, 4 out of 5 isn't bad, but missing Hank is a big miss.

Can we find room on the bench for Keith Jones too? Man he was fun to watch.

RE: All-Time Stanford Basketball Lineup - Phogge - 06-11-2020

Long bench. Ryan Mendez gets a seat too because he could do everything and hardly anyone noticed.

RE: All-Time Stanford Basketball Lineup - BobK - 06-11-2020

Art Harris
Don Griffin
George Selleck

Need to protect the lead late in the game, Mendez to the free throw line...game over. Or, playing against a zone, Mendez will bust it. Or, need a quick comeback, Mendez running off screens for three pointers. I loved Ryan Mendez.

RE: All-Time Stanford Basketball Lineup - Phogge - 06-11-2020

Somehow Mendez would grab an important rebound and always played tight defense. The ultimate unsung guy.
