HOF trivia - Phogge - 06-20-2020

At age 42 and after 20 seasons in baseball I enlisted in the Marine Corps and saw action in the Pacific. I have the third highest ERA among HOF members. Who am I?

RE: HOF trivia - BobK - 06-20-2020

So it’s WW2 and a pitcher born 1920 or close. Hmm

RE: HOF trivia - Phogge - 06-20-2020

Do the math Bobbbbbb. Age 42 during WW2.

RE: HOF trivia - BobK - 06-20-2020

or maybe 1900 LOL
Red Ruffing wild guess.
OK I goggles Ruffing and while missing some toes he was in the service but then it mentioned the winner in his wiki story.

So last name the same as a Seals pitcher in our boyhood. :)

RE: HOF trivia - Phogge - 06-20-2020

That Seal pitched but in 1953 he was the regular CF. Have his '53 Mother's Cookies card. Don't think he is related to the HOFer.

One of my favorite players abd a did t recall his position
22 HRs one year with the Seals and played for half the PCL teams.

But do have have the name of the WW2 vet ?

Not yet.

RE: HOF trivia - BobK - 06-20-2020

Well Ted Lyons enlisted in the Marines at age 42 and fought in the South Pacific.

So need a hint on the other pitcher.

RE: HOF trivia - Phogge - 06-20-2020

What other pitcher? Al Lyons pitched a bit.

Ted Lyons participated in the invasion of Kwajalein Atoll along with a famous minesweeper, the USS Caine. What was the name of her skipper and what was the nickname that a ships officer called the captain?

RE: HOF trivia - BobK - 06-20-2020

Mr Roberts no Henry Fonda

RE: HOF trivia - Mick - 06-20-2020

Giants' pitcher Christy Mathewson essentially did that in WWI, and it ultimately killed him.

After his Giants' career was over, Mathewson enlisted in the Chemical Warfare group, and was accidentally exposed to poisonous gas during training.  His lungs were damaged, and susceptible to tuberculosis, which he contracted.  Died at the age of 45.

The Caine was real?  Bogie played Capt Queeg but I'm guessing that wasn't Old Yellowstain's real name.
