One thing that I was struck by from reading John Barry's The Great Influenza, was that scientists in 1918 were producing and administering vaccines in a matter of weeks, in the midst of the outbreak. They didn't even know what a virus was at the time or that it caused influenza. Most of course did nothing, but some directed against pneumococcus, a bacteria which frequently caused secondary bacterial pneumonia, actually did seem to lower mortality, though nothing was done in a controlled manner clearly.

Those guys would probably think we are wusses with our months and months of clinical trials.
