But freshman and some other students will be on-campus taking on-line classes and getting tested every 3 days. Up to 40% of students will be on campus.
Ivy League is expected to make an announcement about fall sports on Wednesday.

I noticed this at UWash
"
COVID-19 outbreak along UW's Greek Row continues to grow"
"As of Sunday, UW officials say at least 112 fraternity house residents have tested positive for COVID-19, with nine additional cases in those who were close contacts to those infected."

Quote:Though we plan to invite every undergraduate student to spend a semester on campus, all undergraduates will have the option to complete the entire year remotely. As students consider their choices, they should bear in mind that the campus experience will be very different from an ordinary year. For example, most undergraduate teaching will be online rather than in person even for on-campus students. Many activities will be unavailable, impermissible, or highly regulated. Parties will be prohibited. Masks will be required in indoor spaces, including in all classrooms, laboratories, and libraries. Social distancing will be the norm. Travel will be limited. We will test students for COVID-19 when they arrive, and we expect to test them regularly thereafter. Isolation will be mandatory for students who test positive for COVID-19; quarantine will be mandatory for students who have been in contact with someone who gets COVID-19.

That seems to be a common path now. Harvard, Princeton, Yale and Stanford all have a rotation plan by academic class to get a limited on-campus experience with every student getting an online option for almost all classes.

Just announced. International students can't get visas and/or have to leave the US if colleges only offer online classes:

That would include someone very close to our family. I expect this to be tied up in court until the election and beyond.

Agree with you on it being tied up.

Thought about this a lot. If I were between my HS/Sr. year and Frosh year in college, I'd take a gap year, no question, even if I had to reapply the following year. I'd probably take a gap year if it were my soph or junior year. Senior year, I'd probably hang in there, tbh.

I would probably contact a school that was considering me but didn't admit and ask if they would reconsider admission if I enrolled in the fall. This fall would probably be my best shot at getting into a reach school. With a lot of people expected to defer till next fall, what does that do to next year's high school seniors. Are they looking at fewer admissions slots as schools have to contend with all the students who defer from this year? Do school's expand the 2021 freshman class to cope?

Harvard and MIT take action
Quote:Within the last hour, we filed pleadings together with MIT in the US District Court in Boston seeking a temporary restraining order prohibiting enforcement of the order. We will pursue this case vigorously so that our international students—and international students at institutions across the country—can continue their studies without the threat of deportation.

The legal battle is important, but my guess is most schools will quickly create requirements that navigate around this issue. At UCB the students are trying to do something, at least that was the chyron on FoxNews. They were using it as a negative, but I saw it as a great solution to an odd way to discourage schools from taking sensible steps to reduce the spread of COVID in the cities and towns near the university.
Consistent with the UCB student idea, I would expect schools will declare things like international students MUST meet with their advisor in person at least once each term for any number of reasons. Or perhaps a 1 unit class that must be completed on campus. Presumably international students at some schools will now get priority for the lab-based hybrid classes, for example.
Loads of ways to navigate this one, but the message it sends to the world's best students is to find options other than the USA.
I think COVID is getting used for some very dangerous anti-immigration policies. The mere idea from this administration will have a negative impact on leading American universities ability to attract and retain the best students and professors from around the world. And that's just very disappointing.

While I can't imagine any reason why the INS needs to deport students because their classes are online and not in person, I think everybody should realize that "foreign" students will have a big problem traveling to and from the USA. Our borders are closed, and lots of other nations borders are closed to us. International travel isn't so easy. Flights are not nearly as plentiful as before. Until this virus is defeated, I expect most foreign students will not be in a hurry to apply to schools in the USA. They may get stuck here with no way home.

I don't support the action. However, one thing about an all online curriculum is that, apart from time zone differences, there is nothing that says that a student can't "attend" their University from wherever they happen to be from. Whether they would want to is another matter, of course. But particularly for prestigious universities where the greatest value comes from the degree, I could see foreign students continuing to enroll from home.

I guess that is true, but from my experience trying to work with Europe that way it is very difficult. If it is one meeting a week, it is possible. Doing even four hours a day would basically require you to live on the time zone that your university uses. While possible, it is certainly painful. It would be doubly difficult if you don't speak the language well and can't go ask anybody to help you out. The isolation would be extreme. I imagine some would try it though.

Agreed. I left Wash DC on March 13 and returned to Silicon Valley, but I've stayed on the eastern time zone ever since. I generally go to bed between 8 and 9 and wake up between 4 and 5. I don't much care for it, and I find it a burden -- and yes, it's much better than being in the DC metroplex where I didn't own a car -- but I find it just barely livable. If I had to have regular calls with Asia or EMEA, I couldn't function.
