So I’ll return Duke to my list for future WBB road trips. In a few years.

Love Kara Lawson - super smart, articulate and really knows her basketball. This is bad for Stanford women’s basketball, imho.

Agree bad since top East Coast student athletes may stay in their time zone - but she has not yet coached a day in college so it may be true only in a few years.

Tremendous athlete at Tennessee, but her only coaching experience is a year as an assistant in the NBA (actually, less than a year because of COVID). Nonetheless, I expect her to do well. I feel point guards make good coaches, and she was in the WNBA for a long time before coaching.
Always liked her. For those with long memories, did we recruit her? She seems like someone who we would have wanted.

She chose Tennessee over Stanford. Her father wanted the Cardinal... but she went with her heart instead.

Yes - this very "off" off season has been mostly bad news for us from a competitive coaching standpoint - three programs we have had to recruit against to varying degrees - ND, TX, and Duke - all made big upgrades. And whether or not Lawson is the next coming of her former coach Summitt, I imagine recruits will find her night and day in terms of demeanor vis-a-vis JPM, so that alone will make her much harder to recruit against.
In theory, Duke should be our absolute closest competitor from a recruiting standpoint given the similarities in size, university style, and academics-athletics excellent.

USB coaching change a big upgrade? Really? That seems like a stretch.

I'm pretty sure she coached a USA team this past summer. I think it was the 3x3 and I don't know if she was an assistant on any other teams for team USA. So, she has some experience. Plus the hundreds of participants for USA tryouts that she has been able to see and get a first hand look at so even though she hasn't coached in the college game I'm sure she has a good idea of the 2021 and 2022 classes which will help her get settled at Duke.

In the few days after Ivey was hired, Notre Dame picked up commits from #2 Olivia Miles and #13 Sonia Citron. This followed by the arrival of Dara Mabrey in South Bend is a major movement. Yes, Muffet is a legend, but recruiting and this past season had been a struggle for the Irish. I think there’s a lot of interesting moves going on, with Kara Lawson being the latest big splash. It remains to be seen whether she’ll go the way of Stephanie White or Lindsay Whalen (might be too early to judge Minnesota) or if she can return Duke to the glory days of Goestenkors.
It also remains to be seen whether Duke becomes an immediate threat to steal Fudd.

First and foremost, I was talking from a recruiting standpoint. And yes, Ivey was the recruiting ace in the hole for the Domers for a long time, and it was not a coincidence their recruiting and retention went off a cliff when she it became widely anticipated that she would likely be leaving once her son graduated high school. Muffet is a brilliant tactician and motivator, but Ivey was probably even better liked by most Domer players and the loyalty to her is profound for an assistant coach.
And I agree that while it will be TBD for several seasons whether Ivey and Lawson are
coaches for the ages, we have always had a small number of recruits we can target and the Domers and Dook are two of the schools that are competitive for those kinds of recruits. We have lost recruits to both of them in the past, including Miles and Citron right after Ivey came on board. The only other place we regularly lose recruits to is Geno, and that is pretty apples and oranges.
So as recruiters, Ivey has already shown her prowess. And what 17-year-old wouldn't want to be coached by a WNBA/Women's National Basketball legend who can help them navigate everything from college to pro ball to off-court basketball opportunities? As for Schaefer, he has been to as many national championship games in the past 4 seasons as Tara has in the past 28, and he did it without a single McDonald's A-A recruit. Recall that three of our best players in the past 20 years have been Texas natives (Nneka, Chiney, and Kiana Williams), and two others who were highly impactful (Amber Orrange and Lili Thompson) also went to HS in Texas.
I am not kidding when I say that from a recruiting competition standpoint, the past three months have been worse for us than the past five seasons combined.

Agreed. Although this may be irrational long-term but assuming Fudd not coming here, I would prefer she choose Duke than UConn! And yes those two Citron and Miles to ND hurt. Want Iriafen then strong ‘22 class please!

ND has the # 19,21 and 27 players coming in as Frosh for this season. How can one say that recruiting fell off?
As Frosh last year the #s 6 and 21
That’s falling off?
RE: OT National Women’s Basketball -
Lorcan - 07-12-2020
Bob, I think the “falling off” has more to do with the massive struggle that they had this past season. Whether this was an anomaly or a part of a larger trend is up for some debate. The Domers lost Jackie Young to the WNBA, Abby Prohaska was diagnosed with a condition that prevented her from playing, Mikayla Vaughn was off-injured despite the promise she had. The transfer of Ali Patberg to Indiana all those years ago also contributed to the disaster last year despite the arrival of reinforcements in Marta Sneizek. They only had 6-7 healthy players at times throughout the year, which is mind boggling. For example, even with the Dodson injury, and the niggling knocks that other players had, we still had plenty of reserves to have a pretty good year. At least Notre Dame didn’t lose to Western Illinois, although getting sent off into the sunset by losing to Pittsburgh is a pretty bad taste.

Thanks Lorcan excellent thoughts. Plus another injury to their second Frosh although I think that was late January.
Arizona just got another commit top player

That’s 8 for next year for Oregon state with 3 coming in and of those 5 continuing 2 didn’t play last season out with injuries.
Checking numbers Brown will redshirt and Aquino will not be cleared
Tudor has applied for a redshirt

Tough to count the USA 3x3 tournaments as coaching experience because FIBA rules prohibit coaches from sitting on the bench during games. She's never been an assistant on any other USA teams. She was an assistant for 60+ Celtic games.
I'm sure she'll call Iriafen and Fudd, if she hasn't already, but neither will go to Duke. Too late in the process and to much uncertainty at Duke right now. The current Duke roster is pretty bad.

Ivey will be a very good recruiter at ND but Miles and Citron were picking ND had Muffet remained as the head coach.

Lawson mentioned in her introductory press conference that one of the first things she did as Duke's new coach was to reach out to recruits. She didn't identify the recruits by name, of course, but presumably Iriafen and Fudd were among those contacted. She and Iriafen are now following each other on IG. Kara and Azzi were already following each other on IG.
