The Potomac Drainage Basin Indigenous Persons will be getting a new name. Twenty years from now, (if there was even football), people will be astounded that the name lasted until the year 2020, in the way that we are astounded today that miscegenation laws were still in the books (though unenforceable) until the 90's.

Moving. Right now on both the Big Rez and the Checkerboard Rez the Navajo is being battered by Covid. Breathtaking scenery and heartbreaking conditions.

I'm casting my vote for the Washington Feces, because it rhymes with DCs :P

The numbers are very sad, and the relative lack of infrastructure (medical and otherwise) makes it hard to combat the virus effectively.

Good for Stanford, that it stepped up and changed its mascot decades ago. It wasn't easy then, but it was the right thing to do, despite the fact that so many alums were really unhappy to say goodbye to Prince Lightfoot etc. Sadly, there are still a few old alums around who mourn for the old Indian mascot. I know a few of them, but I think if you asked them today, most would agree that in fact it was a good decision. As for adopting the name "Cardinal" and having no mascot at all, well, that's another matter. I get so tired of explaining to people from other colleges that no, the tree is not Stanford's mascot. It's the band's mascot. Huh?? is the usual reaction.

I thought it was because it described their current team.

Of course the tree is our mascot, whether that be official or not - it's in the logo on our uniforms, at center court and at the 50 yard line. Anybody who argues otherwise is just being pedantic at this point.

Maybe but the person in the costume is right out of a Looney Toons cartoon. And anyone under 50 that is curious about Looney Toons just ask because I've seen them all. So much better than Pixar. Daffy Duck should get an AFI tribute.

I guess it is pedantic in a way, but the fact is, the teams are called the Stanford Cardunal, not the Stanford trees

Finally! This should have happened long, long ago. Stanford dropped "Indians" 48 years ago. Better late than never, I guess.
Anybody want to take a guess about the new name for the team?
Something related to government -- Federals, Americans, Presidents, Ambassadors, Generals? (Nationals and Capitals are taken, and Senators has been done.)
Something that keeps the word "Red" -- Red Wolves, Redhawks, Redtails, Red Storm?
Something more generic -- Warriors, Renegades?

one possible name is "Lobbyists"

I like Veterans. Shortened to Vets so GI's, Air personnel and sailors can share with dog, cat and gerbil doctors.

Generals?!? Seriously? Wasn't that Trump's team in the USFL?

Redhawks always made the most sense to me. They could even keep their hideously annoying song: "Hail to the Redhawks, hail victory . . . "

Apparently, Red Tails is the leading contender.

Isn't the Washington Generals the team that plays against the Globetrotters?

Led by Red Klotz, the little playing coach whose team lost thousands of games to the Trotters.
