4 footballers test positive
190 tests given
Given that many players come from areas that are considered hotspots right now 4 testing positive is not that bad. Hope they all recover quickly.
Few things come to mind -
4 out of ???
How and when did those 4 travel to campus prior to the testing?
Given that asymptomatic types are likely flying around the USA right now, it probably would have been best for everyone to isolate for at least 14 days on campus before coming together as a team. Not sure if that was the process, but that type of 14 day quarantine for all recent travelers has been common in countries that have had the best success.
Which brings me to the real concern-
Those road games will create an impossible gauntlet for college teams as they will encounter all types of potential COVID positive people before and after the game. There are just too many cases in the USA for me to believe a team could avoid COVID positive people en route to the road venue.
One probably needs to just look at these college football teams. A lot of the programs are reporting the players tested positive when they arrived on campus. Just can't help but wonder how many people those players interacted with on their travels to campus when they were presumably asymptomatic carriers of the virus.
All worries for a different time, I guess.

The good news is the non footballers who are on campus now tested negative.

With every such report, I think it would be useful to know the following:
1. how long after student arrived on campus was the test administered? (i.e., is there reason to believe the virus was contracted here or prior to arrival?)
2. is positive testee asymptomatic?
3. if not, what symptoms?
4. does the testee require hospitalization?
This strikes me as pretty basic and useful information, much of which is never reported (beyond positive test by X number of players).

If there have been new cases on the football team after team members have been working out together, the only way to stop it is for every member of the team to go into 14 days of isolation.

I thought the football players were being kept in small groups for the time being.
About half the tests were of football players, but they accounted for all of the positives.

Re point 1, they went from 4 to 7 from 7/13 to 7/17 so it seems it was locally transmitted if the players have been back since the beginning of the month.

Some players are still in the process of returning to campus, so it's possible players have returned and tested positive within this time frame. Connor Wedington posted a "goodbye hometown" picture on his Instagram yesterday, for example.

Just a guess but I think Stanford is the most susceptible in the Pac-12 from a probability standpoint because a higher percentage of our students (and team) come from parts of the country where they must fly to get to the Bay Area. An airplane is the last place I'd want to be for a few hours with a bunch of strangers. A multi-day road trip overnighting in several hotel/motel rooms also makes that list.
But really, in theory it only takes one case to pose a potential team-wide threat, so of course it's not just a Stanford issue. If the games are indeed held this fall, quarantined players would presumably be held out of games, which creates a de facto "injury list." But isn't there then a confidentiality issue to deal with? And it's hardly vital, but we go from there to totally messing up the Vegas betting lines, which will mean simply that sportsbooks will stop offering sports betting.
It's pretty easy to see how this just isn't going to work. NCAA will need to amend and clarify the impact on recruiting and eligibility.

High time to shut it down. Anything else without a bubble is stupid. The NCAA needs to have the balls to suspend all Fall/Winter sports.
