From the CEO of Merck, so someone with experience in vaccine development. The TL;DR version...

The distinction is that I'd bet there is more money, research hours, and resources being expended on that vaccine than all the others COMBINED. Plus there have been some notable advances both on the science and the instrumentation.
So we shall see.

I think the vaccine hype is warranted to a degree. We have so many candidates in trials now, some in advanced trials.
What is very plausible though is that we have unprecedented speed at delivering only a somewhat effective vaccine, and yet we still accept that as all we've got. And hopefully it's good enough to stave off the pandemic.
