UC Berkeley going 100% remote instruction this fall - Jamesy - 07-21-2020

They were previously going with the hybrid model, now all remote.

They probably had no other choice.  So much uncertainty right now it is sad.   Does this spell the end for fall sports at Berkeley.  Does this signal the beginning of the end for fall PAC-12 sports.

Feels like the college football establishment is waiting for a miracle. Ain't happening for a bit given the current trend up for Covid infections. The kids are caught in the middle but having an empty campus with 100 football players doing their thing is very bad policy. This is education for Pete's sake. Should be axiomatic, no students then no activities.

Even with 100% remote instruction, there will be students on campus, as the memo notes. So Pac-12 fall sports *could* happen, but I think it's more likely that, if they happen, they start after January 1.

On a related note: the conference decided last week that football, men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball, would schedule Conference-only games. The usual suspects play Pac-12 football and women's soccer and volleyball. According to pac-12.com, here are the conference teams for men's soccer: Cal, Oregon State, San Diego State (!), Stanford, UCLA, Washington.

So a standard home and away conference schedule would be 10 games, so each team would miss 8 or 9 nonconference matchups. Given the liberal substitution rules, they could play two games a week and be finished with the abridged schedule within five weeks. Or they could play one game a week because of Covid testing restrictions and still be finished in 10 weeks.

This is a long-winded way of saying that I could see *some* fall sports--such as men's soccer--being played *at some time* during the 2020-21 academic year. I'm not so sure about football, though.

Why?
It's safer for the participants, who undoubtedly want to play.  And the school makes some money, which saves some jobs.
Hell, even the students distance learning may want to have a team to watch and root for on TV.

Why should the policy be:  we have to punish the most number of people positble?  Does "misery loves company" rule the policy day now?

BTW, soccer should play in the fall.  No reason not to.  See PL, Bundesliga, etc.  It's proven to be a relatively safe activity (as far as I can tell from following the sport).

I don't know that the issue is as much the safety of the activity--I agree that soccer is relatively safe as long as certain precautions are met, like pre-match testing, spacing out the subs on the bench, etc. I think the reticence for college soccer is due to other, related factors, like positivity rates in the visitor's and guest's locales, how long it takes to get back a test result, safety of air travel, safety of accommodations, age/health of the coaching staffs and the folks with whom they live, etc. PL and Bundesliga can afford to take steps that US college soccer teams cannot afford and/or they exist in comparatively safer environments.

well this is an interesting potential twist from the Stanford housing office

Quote:we may need to change plans. We expect to reach a decision in mid- to late August. If we do need to cancel the on-site aspects of autumn quarter, we will reconfigure our cohort plan so that frosh, sophomores, and first-year transfers do not have to wait until summer to be on campus.

The campus described would be such an awful experience I am not so sure there is a lot of value to living on campus.

I saw the comment about "not have to wait until summer to be on campus" and thought...
Right...
They will have to wait for fall 2021 to be on campus.  :)

The freshman year is a real big part of the Stanford Undergraduate experience and it looks like their on campus experience will not be that great.  It will be unique, so perhaps that will turn into a positive for them over time.

Each school in the Pac-12 stands to make tens of millions of dollars from TV if there is a football seasons.  Entire athletic department budgets depend on it.  This is a confounding factor as administrators try to decide what to do.  How many more programs will be cut/go on hiatus if there is no TV revenue?
