Ohio Scandal May Aid Governor in COVID fight - chrisk - 07-21-2020

Ohio House Speaker Householder was arrested Tuesday in a $60 million bribery scandal involving the owner of 2 nuclear plants which were bailed out. FirstEnergy's stock dropped 17% on the news. In the indictment, it was called Company A.

Householder and his leadership team in the legislature are rural right-wing Republicans and strongly anti-mask. They hamstrung fellow Republican Governor DeWine from taking stronger action against COVID. Early on, Ohio had more success than neighboring Michigan, but is now facing the strongest surge in the northern half of the country.

Oh wow...what a mess.  Householder stated that he has no plans to resign, which means he can only be removed from office if convicted of a felony or voted out by 2/3s of the House.  Since the legal system is probably going to take forever, the only other option is for the House to vote him out.  However, Democrats only hold 38 of the 99 seats in the Ohio House.  Although the governor, state GOP party leader, state attorney general, and state Senate president all called for Householder to resign, his House leadership team has not done the same.

If Householder doesn't resign, Ohio House could kick him out

Dewine just declared state wide masking. Don't know if the GOP house leader being arrested had any implication in the timing of it.

He telegraphed he was strongly considering it Sunday on Meet the Press. He canceled his Tuesday press conference, giving the attorney general center stage. Following his imposition of the statewide mask order today, he will be doing his first night-time press conference, televised statewide. He had first considered the statewide mask order in April, but met blowback from the rural Republicans who control the state legislature.

The problem with all these "quarantines" is that they operate on an honor system. Many people (in fact probably the vast majority) just ignore these "requirements". Reminds me of the problems the Irish are having with American tourists. Nobody is going to book a trip to Ireland (or Cleveland) where they start out with two weeks isolation in a hotel. Yet people do book 1 week or 2 week long trips to Ireland. I would think the airlines wouldn't sell such fares, but they do.

My former line manager has taken a position in Basel and is flying out there tonight.  He has a mandatory 10 day (not sure why not 14 days) quarantine, where he (and his family) have to stay on their property 24/7.  He got special dispensation from the company to rent an AirBnB until his apartment is available just so that he could have access to a back yard (it's actually cheaper than the hotel they would have put him up in), which he requested for his own sanity.

Well, I guess Switzerland isn't technically part of the EU.  Hmm, I've never been.  Maybe now's the time...

Swiss 10 day quarantine mentioned in this article about CDC shortening their recommended quarantine time to 10 days from 14. I think its about fine of a net you want.
