Daniel Bard’s Long Road Back from the Yips -

I thought it was a good read.
Quote:Baseball's most mysterious ailment completely derailed the former Red Sox flamethrower. He's finally found his way back to the big leagues for the first time in seven years.

Thanks, JJJ, that was a good read. Reminds me of a Dodgers second baseman from, I think, the 1980s: Steve Sax?

Then there was a Mike Ivie who developed a mental block that made it hard for him to throw the ball back to the pitcher. Not good for a catcher.
As to Sax, reminds me of a story I heard (probably apocryphal, but I like it). Lasorda was exhorting the troops. He asked Pedro Guerrero, who at the time was playing third (poorly) “Pete- it’s the bottom of the ninth there’s two outs we’re up by a run there’s a runner on third what is your first thought? “. Guerrero: “Don’t hit it to me.” Lasorda: “Jeez Pete, ok then what’s your second thought?” Guerrero: “Don’t hit it to Sax.”
Great article btw. I can’t root for the Rockies – but I can root for him.

How about Rick Ankiel?
Major League Pitcher until he suddenly couldn't find the strike zone. Went back to the minors as a center fielder and became the first player since Babe Ruth to win at least 10 games as a pitcher, and hit 50 home runs.

I didn’t notice it at first, but the hyperlink to the word “yips” in the article gives you this story on Lester that mentions Sax and all the others.

Who's the only position player to pitch two innings in his only career pitching appearance and gave up no walks, hits or runs?
Who's the only position player to strike out the side?

I think there was a catcher for the Mets that had a hard time throwing back to the mound as well.

Wasn't Grote. He had a cannon.

Former Giant Chili Davis, of the California Angels, pitched against the Texas Rangers when they were down 18-1 on 6/17/93. Allowed no hits, walks or runs in two innings. He did hit Jose Canseco with a pitch, however.
BTW, Chili Davis had more home runs (350) than either Jack Clark (340) or Will Clark (284). Their career WAR was considerably higher. Chili 's was 38.2, Jack's was 53.2, Will's was 56.5
Who's the only position player to strike out the side? Mark Whiten of the Indians, vs. the A's, 7/31/98. Struck out Blowers, Tejada and Neill.

It was Mackey Sasser. (I looked it up.) He did fine in every other facet of the game, including throws to second on attempted steals. He just could not throw back to the pitcher without double clutching. Sometimes base-runners would try to take advantage of his issue by jogging to first on a walk and then attempting to continue to second at a sprint when he had issues getting it back to the pitcher; it did not usually work. I remember hearing a report that coaches had tried telling him to, instead, imagine himself throwing down to second when returning the ball to the pitcher, but they stopped that experiment quickly when he almost took the head off a pitcher.

Didn't Chuck Knoblock have a throwing problem?

Yes on chuck and mentioned before Dale Murphy thus the switch to CF
Edwards the Reds catcher

Edwards did a double pump but I think that was partially because he got caught by a delayed steal (runner takes off to second as soon as the catcher tosses the ball back to the mound).

Well Edwards made for long games double pumping over and over
