Done. Hope that is okay with Yvonne.

yup

Re: Introductions - UltimateCard - 02-15-2017

Now that I've taken the plunge, I guess I better say something about myself. I was co-term at Stanford from 1979 to 1985. The Cardinals' (yes, plural then) rally from 22 points down to win the Astro-Bluebonnet Bowl was a not insignificant factor in my decision to come west from NYC. Too bad Bill Walsh left for the 49ers before he had a chance to coach John Elway.  :(  I played Ultimate Frisbee at Stanford (hence, my moniker) - I'm convinced Dean Fred let me in because I had a high school varsity letter - and even won a national championship (though it was the British Championship in indoor Ultimate - our team was called the Cliveden Studs, named after the horse farm across the lane). Have followed Stanford sports since those student days. Memorable (though not always pleasant) moments I've witnessed in person include The Play (1982); the Gator Bowl (1986); Revenge of the Play (1990); Women's Final Four's in Knoxville (1990), New Orleans (1991), Los Angeles (1992), and Minneapolis (1995); and the men's basketball victory over Tim Duncan's Demon Deacons in the San Jose Regional (1997). Kids arrived on the scene in 1998 so attendance has waned significantly, though we did make it to the 2014 Rose Bowl. Nowadays, I attend a few football games and WBB games each year but try to follow developments on this board to get my Stanford sports fix. Looking forward to chiming in every now and then.

Welcome, UltimateCard (I tried to shorten it to the two initials, but well, that became disturbing...). My son played Ultimate at Brown and loved it and the other people on the team. I think it's a great sport.

do you know Brian Fouty (dorm mate of mine in Serra in 1979-80)?

Welcome UltimateCard. Good to see another poster from the same era. We have a few from the early-to-mid 80s here.

I remember the name; I was a clueless, first-gen college freshman then so that whole first year was a bit of a blur...

Thanks, JJJ. One of the reasons I've not been going to as many Stanford sporting events is that I married one of Fred's Mistakes --- as in she didn't get in!  :o  She went to Oxy and is way more accomplished than I'll ever be!  ::)

Brian Fouty was a dorm mate of mine in Serra in 1980-81!

he was from Seattle and a pre-med (now a doctor) and got big into Ultimate.  He helped drive the implementation of "the stack" while he was on the Ultimate team.  He lived on my floor in 79-80.

Welcome, UltimateCard, from another member of the class of 83, a Cliveden alum (spring 81) and an ultimate player, though at the IM level through the Toyon Eating Clubs.

We must've tossed a disc on the Cliveden parterre (I was there winter and spring '80-'81) and likely on the IM fields, too.

Thanks for the laugh on a Friday afternoon. Somewhere, there must be a meme/pic that says "Berklee <doesn't equal> Berkeley" that should be posted in many places, frequently, and for the benefit of the music school. :P

Re: Introductions - stanfordftw - 04-07-2017

Hello my fellow Cardinal,

I am a (relatively) recent alum who grew up in NYC and currently live there.  I have been casually following this message board for awhile now.  I am particularly interested in admissions-related issues (especially re: recruited athletes).

Re: Introductions - yvonne - 04-07-2017

Welcome. We're glad you joined the CardBoard, FTW!

(Did you see what I did there?)

Welcome to the board!  While we do try to keep an eye on the admissions/athletics intersection, most of this process remains a black box, a subset of the most highly-guarded secrets at Stanford.  Such has it always been...

Re: new participant here - SF_Cardinal_Fan - 04-18-2017

Hello All,

I grew up a 49ers season ticket holder.
Five years ago, when the 49ers vacated San Francisco, I became a Raiders season ticket holder.
When the NFL owners approved a  Raiders relocation to Las Vegas, I decided not to renew my Raiders tickets.
So, I am now a Stanford Cardinal football season ticket holder  :) My wife, 16 year old son and myself are looking forward to doing some tailgating and attending the 2017 Stanford football home games. Glad to be here.

Welcome to the greatest sports university in the country.

Re: Introductions - CornFed - 04-18-2017

And the (usually) most civil sports discussion thread in existence.  That might be due to the virtually monolithic support for all things Stanford.  8)

Welcome, SF_Cardinal_Fan.
