RE: Big 10 Cancelling Fall Season - BostonCard - 08-11-2020

I believe they said they are "postponing" their season.  They will try to play in the spring.

Do they offer scholarships for "kicking the can" down the street and around the block?  These people will sell out their sacred "student athletes" faster than TV networks can write checks for broadcasting rights. Which, come to think about it, will be pretty skinny in the foreseeable future. Thus, some panicky folks running amok today.  https://www.sfchronicle.com/sports/annkillion/article/It-seems-inevitable-Pac-12-Big-Ten-reportedly-15473512.php

I am confident Stanford University will honor scholarships so students can attend classes and graduate.

Not super confident that will be true everywhere.    A number of schools need annual football revenue to pay for almost everything, do not have meaningful assets and carry a mountain of debt.   Many of those institutions are regional public state schools that may not be able to ask their states for sports bailout cash while the government is unable to pay for far more essential community services (police, fire, teachers, unemployment benefits, etc.).

PAC-12 guaranteed scholarships for opt-outs. Shouldn’t it be the same if the season is canceled?

Brett MacMurphy reports that Pac-12 has decided to go along with Big 10.

RE: Big 10 Cancelling Fall Season - Spiny_Norman - 08-11-2020

Both Nebraska in its statement and Nick Saban in his public comments have stressed their belief that athletes are safer within the structure provided by the football team. Compared to what? What are the alternatives for football players if there is no fall season?

1. Be a regular student. Attend classes on campus if offered. Continue to work out under the auspices of the strength and conditioning program.
2. Be a regular student remotely. Work out on your own.
3. Stop out or drop out to prepare for the NFL draft. Some players have already announced their intention to do this.

Are Nebraska and Coach Saban saying that the football players are safer than if they were out in the general student population? Or safer than they would be at home? Why would that be the case?

I will admit that I am growing increasingly uncomfortable with the extent to which some schools provide special resources to football players that are unavailable to the general student population. How would you feel as an undergrad or grad student (or the parent of one) and be told that in the middle of a pandemic your university has chosen to protect football players more than you?

RE: Big 10 Cancelling Fall Season - Softball Fan - 08-11-2020

I have noticed in a number of news reports the author says fall sports are "cancelled".  While that is accurately stated a better word is "postponed" if there is some thought of playing the sport in the spring.

I wonder how many schools will permanently drop football. Cal is in a brobdingnagian hole financially so if so then they retire owning The Axe.

I am not really talking about OSU.   Rather some of the smaller regional schools that have traditionally struggled to find the funds to play D1 sports.   The schools that build their schedule around securing Power 5 road game paydays and/or constantly ask their state officials for bailouts or subsidies.

Though a school from that distressed group can play Nebraska 12 times this season.  :)

For UCB I really wonder if the Regents will keep paying that debt for the UC AD.   How binding was their commitment on that front?   I would think the UC will have far greater needs for their funds and access to loans, especially since the State of California will be unable to help too much with emergency funds.

I would guess most of those that have loaned money to the UCB AD will work with them on restructuring terms, the UCB AD has access to enough revenue in more stable times that terms for restructured debt should be possible.

Can the AD declare bankruptcy and reorganize the loan?

I guess we will find out, not necessarily with UCB as I would guess the UC's endowment would allow UCB or the UCB AD to find a way to secure access to funds.

However I would guess at the D1 level there will also be some ADs that will not have the financial resources to get to 2021-2022.   There are a number of schools that took out very big loans to pay for very fancy infrastructure projects in the last 10 years.

Ordinarily all should be OK as the school, or the state would give money or favorable loans, but these are not ordinary times.

The Stanford AD is not exactly sitting pretty either, but with less debt and more assets the AD should be OK as long as donor support remains strong.

RE: Big 10 Cancelling Fall Season - Softball Fan - 08-11-2020

I read a number of news reports the primary reason the Big Ten Presidents and Chancellors cancelled fall football was liability.  If a player contracted Covid-19 and died, the school would be sued for big money, the president would come under relentless criticism and eventually be fired.

Please remind me the definition of "new" - 7 days?  10 days?  2 weeks?

Also, I think the more valid info would be what case numbers, deaths (and hospitalizations and capacity . . . of course!) are in the counties that Austin, Lubbock, and Fort Worth are in.  I imagine the numbers are still a bit scary (even if some of the worst numbers may be along the border - which is just my rank speculation).

Having said all of the above, it strikes me as imprudent/wishful thinking on part of Big XII (and maybe they are just keeping up appearances . . .  for now).  But if they do actually play, I, for one, will be hoping they pull it off with minimal Covid spread issues (and there definitely will be some somewhere).  I'm not too big on Dean Wormer's outlook on life . . .  just because I can't watch/root for my team, I'm not going to demand that others suffer the same fate . . . even if I think it is imprudent.
