Who goes? - Phogge - 08-11-2020

Little and Adebo almost certainly. Not that many possible draft picks beyond them. I imagine a huuuuuuge number of "student athletes" will declare.

RE: Who goes? - BostonCard - 08-11-2020

Booker, Mills, Sarrell, Dalman, Toner could all get drafted if they have decent seasons.  I don't think they would get more than a FA sniff if there is no season in the spring.

Mills is getting drafted.  Perhaps in first 2 rounds.

RE: Who goes? - Phogge - 08-11-2020

Hope I'm wrong but what has Mills shown except for a 500 yard day against a pass defense even worse than Stanford's. Plus who is going to draft him in the first two rounds with a history of injury?

Of course BC IF they have good seasons. But Booker? Come on.

Here is the last great Stanford recruiting class, the class of 2017.

https://247sports.com/college/stanford/Season/2017-Football/Commits/

These guys would have formed the nucleus of this year’s team. I hope I’m wrong, but I don’t think we’ll see the majority of them in a Stanford uniform again.

People are talking about the draft, and that is a concern for a couple of them.

But the bigger concern for 2021 is the grad transfer portal and retirement. Guys are likely to go where they can be admitted and where football is closer to religion.

Again, I hope I’m wrong, these guys receive an extra year of eligibility (for those that need it), and they feel a sense of unfinished business.  But my sense is that the majority are going to be gone, one way or another.

Unfortunately, I don’t think we are anywhere close to seeing another class like this.

Disagree on a couple.

Mills will be drafted. Probably relatively high. Some have him as a top 5 QB based on mechanics and under-pressure throws (guess how many of those he had while being "protected" by 18-year-olds facing grown-ass men?) alone. Daniel Jones put up terrible stats in college because his receivers were so bad. Some are saying Mills' OL situation was/is similarly obscuring him as a legit prospect, and some of his throws on tape are mind-bogglingly pretty.

Sarell is the Kyle Murphy to Walker Little's Andrus Peat. If drafted, will be drafted based solely on being a former 5*. He probably has more to prove though, and IMO projects better as a guard at the next level.

I've seen Booker projected anywhere from 2nd-5th round in mocks already as a rising true Junior DL. That's pretty crazy. He's better than Phogge seems to think. Not his fault our ILBs couldn't get off blocks and the rest of our DL couldn't rush the passer. (Except for Jovan Swann's one great game against Cal. I wonder if he even starts for Indiana in 2021 (did he get a sixth year to play? I don't remember).)

Dalman is one of the top centers in America, but he's on the smaller side. Dunno about him. For sure with a good season and if he could push 300lbs he'd be in draft talks.

Kicker is a crapshoot and I have no idea how my main man Jet looks to NFL folks. Conrad Ukropina got a bum deal, I thought.

RE: Who goes? - BostonCard - 08-12-2020

I’m not sure what you are disagreeing with me on. I guess the idea that Mills and Sarrell wouldn’t be drafted without a season?  You are probably right that they could be taken on reputation alone without a season, but they’d probably have to shine in camp and even then their i jury history might blow their chances.  Lots of questions about durability on both that are best answered by a healthy season. Agree that Sarrell is probably an NFL guard, as even Peat has proven. Dalman might end up like Chase Beeler, but I do think he has potential to be a late round pick.

Hard to imagine any football program in the country suffering worse from canceling a season than Stanford. The only mitigating factor is that SAT and ACT aren't being used for admission for some period of time, so maybe they can get a few more guys in that they wouldn't otherwise. Of course, Stanford fell way down in recruiting at a terrible time to not be in position to take advantage.

In some ways a blessing. The job of universities is to educate. They apparently are doing a great job of that at UCSF where a revolutionary nasal spray/inhaler is killing Covid and is projected as an OVER THE COUNTER drug. Also Dr. Matthay is conducting a stem cell study that may be effective in fighting the virus once a person is infected.

Perhaps one of the furloughed football players will have a genius moment because he has time to think abstractly without getting his head crushed daily.

Also high time for the uber rich NFL owners to spend a bit of cash and create a minor league. The Duluth’s, Fargo’s, Fresno’s and Waco’s of this country will embrace this level of football. To hell with the NCAA.

Agree 1000% with this approach and it will span the growth and development of local micro-breweries which brings tremendous pride and economic development.

Minor leagues would serve a previous few. And college sports for some kids is an inducement to higher education.  Without that carrot, I would if this wouldn’t be a rather large net loss.

Great on UCSF.  Not sure they had much of an athletic program. :)  So I don’t really get the connection.

It’s easy to crush the NCAA.  They deserve it.  But ending college sports is not the answer.

UCSF had an awesome ad campaign in the late 80s: "125 years and still no sports"

My sense is that the greater the imbalance between academics and athletics, the more naked teams look when the athletic part is taken away.  What's the value proposition at football state university, where classes are a means to an end (staying eligible to be able to compete for a football season that may not happen).  At least the Stanford (and other schools that take academics seriously) players can will still move towards a degree and *gasp* learn something, even if it is not relevant to their draft prospects.  What do you want to bet that the 30-year decision takes on new meaning when recruits and players realize how fragile sports are.

This tells me Booker ain't leaving early.

Bob... Re UCSF entry: Where is Stanford research in the Covid Age? UCSF has a number of ongoing Covid studies and has had much success in stem cell research. They are grabbing headlines. My conjecture was about a possible Stanford player eschewing football and becoming the next Jonas Salk. Could happen. Sorry for being vague but you know how old I am.
