This is ominous for the Tokyo Olympics - cardcrimson - 08-11-2020

70 members of a key Japanese swimming team test positive for Covid. Yikes. Had to be a total screw up on the part of the team to not maintain appropriate precautions.

FWIW, I don't think there was a single outbreak of the virus on the teams in Contra Costa that opened up for swimming. The clubs (dozens, I think) seemed to do a great job of adhering to the County protocols.

Completely disagree. That is irrelevant. The Olympics are going to be totally dependent on vaccine availability. If it is available by April, I think the Olympics might happen. The problem is going to be preparation time for athletes. That will loom as the biggest issue if there is vaccine availability.

They will also be dependent on the efficacy of the vaccine.  A vaccine with 50% efficacy (the minimum bar set by the FDA) would certainly be welcome, but probably not good enough to have a brobdingnagian event if the virus is still widespread.

I assume none of the clubs were from the parts of the county that have resulted in high daily infection rate. Since July 4, the 7 day average of new cases has grown from about 11/100K to 22/100K. Most of that growth has come from East County and norther Part of West County. The swim clubs (at least back in my daughters day), tend to be concentrated in 680/24 corridors. The results are not likely to be the same in sports that aren't concentrated in the better off neighborhoods.

Very true. Though Pleasant Hill, Walnut Creek, Clayton, and Concord have teams that opened up as well, and as far as I know, were safe.
