Why the Pac-12 canceled/postponed fall sports -
Papa John - 08-12-2020
Apologies if this has been posted elsewhere, but Jon Wilner, citing a conference source, has summarized the reasons why the Pac-12 decided to shut down athletics competition for fall 2020:
1. The unsafe level of viral spread in 9 of 11 local jurisdictions
2. Local restrictions--e.g. in LA county currently QBs are not allowed to play catch with their WRs; down the road a single positive test might trigger the exceeding of a local threshold that would require an entire team to quarantine.
3. Myocarditis--not a new finding per se, but, per the medical advisory committee, there are too many unknowns including the potential for cardiac complications for asymptomatic Covid infected folks
4. Testing--still not enough quick turn-around testing, plus the optics of using up resources that are not avaialble to the general public.
At this point, I'm still hopeful that the four issues outlined above can be resolved satisfactorily by January and at least some of the fall sports can have abridged winter/spring seasons.
I do have a question for the medically trained folks on this board? Does extreme physical exertion exacerbate the effects of myocarditis? In other words, are athletes more likely than non-athletes to suffer a sever consequence of myocarditis?

From Mayo Clinic website:
In many cases, myocarditis improves on its own or with treatment, leading to a complete recovery. Myocarditis treatment focuses on the cause and the symptoms, such as heart failure. In mild cases, persons should avoid competitive sports for at least three to six months.

FWIW I was reading a Nebraska University message board where some posters seem to have some inside knowledge. Nebraska is secretly trying to put together a fall season with whoever will play them.
The B1G has already stated any team who attempts to play in the fall will be kicked out of the conference.
I doubt anything will come of it but the Nebraska fans have a completely different mindset about playing the fall season than the Stanford Cardboard posters.

Quote:When [Big 10 commissioner Kevin] Warren was asked specifically by Yahoo Sports if Nebraska could play college football this fall, he gave an answer that would make his hardline predecessor nod with approval.
“No,” he said, firmly. “Not and be a member of the Big Ten Conference.”

Too bad San Quentin doesn't have a team anymore. Our JV football team used to play them every year. We even had a varsity baseball game cancelled by a stabbing.
Nebraska could have played Q and then every Nebraska fan would learn about how easy it is to catch the virus. Probably not many masks on the streets of Lincoln.
How did Scott Frost get into Stanford?

Phogge, I was born and raised in Manhattan, KS during the horror decades of KSU football in the Big 8. I had the privelege of watching some really great Oklahoma and Nebraska teams beat the snot out of the Wildcats. But the most salient memory of those days is how my hometown turned into a sea of red when those teams visited. I know that all the talk these days is about SEC football, but 1970s Oklahoma and Nebraska football just meant more, IMO.
Scott Frost's attitude is not a surprise to me. I would expect the same out of Oklahoma if the Big 12 decides to pull the plug on football.
