OT: RIP Bill Yeoman - Phogge - 08-13-2020

Longtime Houston coach. Invented the Veer Offense that has propelled De La Salle HS into one of the most successful programs all time.

A Stanford subtext was UCLA’s use of the Veer with John Sciarra at QB which Stanford never figured out how to stop.

thanks for the callout.  I had missed the news -- the veer was a fun offense to watch when it was run well.  Yeoman, iirc, integrated collegiate football in the state of Texas.  and he may have the most NCAA sanctioned coach (3 times?) in Texas college history.

The veer (triple-option) offense is stopped cold if you have bad-ass linebackers who are disciplined and do not "free-lance" or improvise. Generally, one or more of the offensive linemen tend to giveaway or telegraph what the offense will do. But the key is a disciplined D-line and "hunter" style LBs. Consistently take away the pass and/or the run or the keeper, just a single option, and the veer is neutered. It's why you don't see it so much anymore.

I would have thought that the record for sanctions in Texas would be more than 3.

I think De La Salle has figured out how to take care of some very good linebackers over the years.

Sanctions are for programs that get caught.

one year, may '76, Yeoman's offense averaged 545 yards/game and that was well before football had migrated to backetball in cleats.
