Brandon Wu wins 1st tourney as a pro - Spiny_Norman - 08-30-2020

Brandon Wu made up a 5 shot deficit with a final round 65 today to win the Korn Ferry Tour Championship event near Evansville, Indiana. It was Wu's first victory as a pro.

it's not easy to make up a 5-shot deficit in one round.
well-done.

By virtue of his win, Brandon now has a guaranteed spot in the U. S. Open, and other PGA Tour events.  He also has a nice check for $180,000 and is fifth on the Korn Ferry points list.

What's interesting are the 14 clubs that Brandon carried in his bag.  A 9.5 loft driver, a three wood, a 2 iron, 4-9 irons and four different wedges, 46, 52, 56 and 60 degrees.  And a putter.

Also after only 6 events Wu  is 8th on the KFT standings, and the guys who are ahead of him have played in twice as many events as he has.  With the top 25 getting the Tour Card, he seems very likely to move on to the PGA.  The club selections are interesting.  Seems to be very confident in his wedge game and chooses to have a variety of choices over a more conventional bag.

Perhaps KFT courses are shorter?  He only carries two woods, no three iron.

In this pandemic-limited season there is no promotion to the PGA Tour this year for the top 25 on KFT. No PGA players are losing their card this year, so there isn't any room for promotion. Rather, the top 25 on a combined 2020-21 KFT schedule will get promoted for the 2022 PGA Tour season. On the plus side, the top 10 on the KFT list will get automatic entry in "opposite field" PGA events in 2021. Those events are typically when the top players are at a WGC event. As far as I know, the only way to fast-track is to win three KFT events in a season, which still gets that player an automatic and immediate PGA card.

Bottom line - we won't be seeing much of Brandon on the PGA tour next year unless he can grab a couple more victories.

Thanks for the correction.  Tough to have to win 2 of the few remaining tournaments.  Not impossible, but certainly difficult.

I recall Wu carrying more hybrids for his mid to long irons while at Stanford (rather than just the 1 in this setup).  4 wedge set up is not too unusual these days.

homecoming at Winged Foot should be fun for him.
