NFL final 53 rosters - SamuelMcF - 09-05-2020

Herbig and Toohill make the Eagles. JJAW was not really in danger.

Meeks makes the Chargers.

Seahawks cut 2 other rookie TEs, so looks like Parkinson is making it (has a minor foot injury).

Scarlett (Titans), Irwin (Bengals), Holder (Broncos), Garnett (WFT) cut. Some are surprised by Holder. I could see him getting picked up on another practice squad.

WSU with only 9 pros is probably indicative that scheme and coaching can overcome talent.  Over the last 4 years WSU has a better overall record than Stanford.

Give me the talent.  Every time.  Scheme can mean some success. But in the end, it’s the players that matter.  Best example is Walsh 1 vs SC.  7 points in 2 years. SC overwhelmed them physically. Little different when Walsh was with Niners and John Robinson the Rams.....

RE: NFL final 53 rosters - Phogge - 09-05-2020

Big mistake on the second drive in 1978. Up 7-0 and on their way to another TD. They run a Darrin Nelson option and he tosses an int. Never scored again. That team matched up physically and one of the great defensive plays in Stanford history was a Bo Boxold hit on Charles White on a fourth and one. Boxold was doomed by injuries as was the other ILB named Budinger. Plus Robbie Chapman who looked like a future star at safety flunked out. Plenty of talent to compete with the So Cals in ‘78. And the next year a 21-21 tie ruined their perfect season.

Remember it well.  Robbie Chapman was the heralded running back recruit.  Not Darrin.  Course, luckily for Darrin, Walsh knew talent and was not afraid to let  a 160 pound freshman RB with off the charts talent do his thing.  He moved Chapman to safety.  Best athletes on the field....

Nelson before his track injury was phenomenal.  He was great after.  But I always thought it cost him a step.  1000 and 50.  Three times.  No one else had ever done it.  Man he was fun to watch.

Yes, I will take talent too, but talent alone won't get it done.  Scheme gave WSU a lot of success considering their past record.  Stanford proved to have a lot of problems with the WSU scheme despite the talent difference.  Talent alone is not enough.

Agree.  My point is in the long run talent is generally going to prevail over scheme. That’s all

Gerald Willhite did it twice. Not three times, but still pretty impressive.

Nelson came close to 4x.  1980 he had 889 rushing and 47 receiving.  He is my all time favorite, you never knew what was going to happen when
he touched the ball.  The qb was Elway,  thinking back, what the hell happened?

Hate to say it, but Paul Wiggin and lack of defense happened.  Scored 312 (still 9th best ypg season at Stanford) and were 11th best in the NCAA.  But, they gave up 275, which was #112 of 138 teams.

Lots of stars on offense, at every skill position: Margerum, Tyler, Nelson, Elway, Vince White, Chris Dressel.  Solid backups in Mike Dotterer, Jim Brown, Rob Moore.

Special teams, nothing special.  Naber missed 3 xps, was 7/16 on FGs, 40.3 yards per punt.

Yup, your're right, Wiggin was a disaster.  My recollection of that era was sitting in section e drunk.  The best part of the day was listening
to the band and the after game concert.

You never knew what team was going to show up with Wiggin. His teams could beat Ohio State, Oklahoma, and Washington (when they were ranked #1 in the nation), but would regularly lose to San Jose State.

Trent Murphy made the Bills final roster.  There was speculation that he'd be a cap casualty, but it sounds like they still value him highly.

Nice for Vaughters to make the Bears

Bryce Love back on IR - the 3 week kind.

Such a long wait for him to make his NFL debut.

So much time recovering makes me think that he may just play as much as he can in the season, cross it off his bucket list, and head on to med school.
