Notre Dame vs. Wake Forest postponed; 13 ND players isolating -

Quote:The Notre Dame-Wake Forest football game scheduled for Saturday has been postponed after the Irish announced 13 players are in isolation.
Is that a lot of players? I'm sure they could still field a team, but I applaud them for doing the right thing...this time.

Is that a lot of players? Depends on the 13. Actually the body of the article implies they really have 23 players out. The 13 in isolation and the 10 in quarantine.
Can't help but wonder if they players got COVID19 from, or gave COVID19 to, the University of South Florida. Given that Notre Dame announced moments before the game that a number of players would be unavailable, I want to guess that COVID19 was already moving around the Notre Dame team prior to the South Florida game.
If that is the case, South Florida will become a very important case study for the rest of the FBS.

What happened to the stringent protocols ND was following? I thought they cracked down after the outbreak at the beginning of the term?

As noted on the other board, a colleague of mine said 7 ND players tested positive. That strikes me as a lot. Also reinforces the questionable point of the Pac starting on November 7th. I mean, is there any way in heck that they're getting through whatever length schedule unscathed?
So, let's say all teams get in 5 games . . . then what?

I think they just keep re-scheduling games after the already-scheduled games take place until the season is done. I think it's foolish to carve an end of the season into stone (as well as postseason dates). You let the regular season take place as safely as possible and don't disincentivize teams from doing the responsible/safe thing.
Meanwhile...everyone else hunker down through what keeps looking like a second wave.

Right on cue and as expected, chrisk.
FYI, I doubt the football team numbers are included in the ND Dashboard. As my colleague pointed out, footballers follow their own, more stringent testing protocols. So it's unlikely that either the number of tests or test results from that separate protocol is reported in the dashboard numbers. But hey, we'll find out for sure in a day or two (or, will find out definitively if they are NOT part of the ND dashboard reporting). Given that ND Dashboard reported 0 positive tests on its last reporting day, if the number remains below 7 for the next few days (or if there isn't an at least 7 positive bump in prior days), we'll have our answer.

All of these schools are just doing their own thing. The conferences did not provide a lot of guidance or rules. Some schools are disclosing often, other schools are not disclosing at all. ND is doing a lot more than other schools. I would hope ND has told South Florida which players tested positive so they can properly isolate the potentially impacted players on their team.
The ND v Wake Forest game was moved to October 3rd, but that is a curious timeline. The ND players currently in isolation should either still be in isolation (14 days) or will have been taken out of isolation just in time to make the team flight (10 days) depending on the policy. I guess ND figures they probably can beat Wake Forest even if many of the players don't get an opportunity to practice as a team.
We are just a few days away from October, when coronaviruses should get much more challenging for communities and schools in the Midwest.

Looks like the ACC did a bit of reshuffling.
Wake Forest moved a game up to Oct 2nd.
And the ND v Wake Forest game will be scheduled (for now) on Dec 12th.
This will likely mean the ACC CG will be held on Dec 19th, if the ACC is still trying to hold a CG by that date.

Turns out ND's dashboard does include football player numbers; thus, the 9/21 test results adjusted up to now read 12 positive tests (can't remember what original number was, but it was very low).
9/22 test results are one positive in 515 tests taken.
Kudos to ND for transparency.

Indiana's Governor is moving to full state re-opening with no restrictions on gathering size. Bars and restaurants all open. Mandatory mask wearing until Oct. 17 only.
Methinks Notre Dame might not finish its season.

Could very well be . . . for ND and many/most/all schools.
I will observe that ND is in a bit of a bubble where it is, as I don't think there is much interaction with South Bend from Joe Student. Obviously, some; but it's not like students are hitting the night life in South Bend with regularity. (Kinda like the way Stanford was with its surrounding communities back in the day). I'm sure more Stanford students hit downtown PA and MP more than back in the day, but even today Stanford is its own bubble in many ways.
BTW, do we know if ND's outbreak was organic; or is it possible, as at least one other poster speculated, that infection was transmitted from USF players? Not that it really matters, but the point would be that ND might not finish its season - and it could have nothing to do with Indiana governor's decision.

I've never been to South Bend, so don't know the campus/area surroundings. I have been to other campuses in the region, including Ohio State and Michigan. If it is anything like Ann Arbor or Columbus, and restrictions are lifted, with no masking, hard to imagine the football team not being impacted, even if they try to be safe. Of course, Indiana and Purdue would also be at risk too.

Based on student population and attraction levels, I'd rank risk levels as follows: IU, Purdue, ND.

I suspect only schools that have had a lot of players already test positive (see Alabama, Clemson, LSU) will really be able to keep playing without a couple of cancellations during the season.
Brings up a curious set of possible outcomes
Imagine one school in a conference cancels 3 or 4 games because they would have had ~10 players unavailable - Notre Dame
Imagine another school plays games even though they had ~10 players unavailable.
The first school finishes 6-1, the second school finishes 9-2.
Which season is more impressive?
How will different conferences pick division winners for the conference CG? (wins, winning percentage, CFP standings)
In other news, the real deal breaker in this recent outbreak is not Notre Dame. It is South Florida.
They already opted against playing this weekend, which is a sensible move given they really should have a large number of players in isolation right now.
https://sports.yahoo.com/south-florida-pauses-workouts-after-notre-dame-covid-19-outbreak-134857634.html
Can't help but wonder if the BigTen would have a similar approach.
Pretty confident they would tell Illinois to cancel if the next game was Illinois vs Northwestern, but would they have tOSU cancel if its next game was tOSU vs Michigan?
The other area of concern for all of the NCAA will be if the South Florida players start testing positive in the next few days. That will be very problematic since they had no positive tests pre-game or immediately post-game, so it would then suggest playing football against Notre Dame likely spread the virus to another community.
