In the end, it was all about the Benjamins.

Madden is forever correct. It's all about the money even for "Student athletes." What a preposterous description.

I'm not a subscriber to the Chronicle, so I'm not able to read more than the first sentence. But I disagree with the author, in that I don't think it's hypocritical for the Pac-12 to play football, as long as (1) it can be done safely, and (2) the other sports are also allowed to play sometime during the academic year.
I've made more detailed arguments elsewhere, but my view is that the decision to restart sports should not be dependent upon the decision to restart in-person instruction (and vice versa, for that matter). But I also want to stress that I do respect the opinions of those who disagree with me. But perhaps we can all agree to cheer for Stanford athletics and look forward to the day that all university activities return to whatever normal the future holds?

Most who play sports in college are indeed student athletes. . . .

Talking solely about football. Not a big fan of other college sports. Good for them if they love competing.

I like the descriptor I've seen recently in articles about the Pac-12 returning to football this fall: student assets.
