Debates and covid - magnus - 10-03-2020

yesterday,  Cleveland officials said 11 cases of covid were tied to predebate prep.

Further,  the vice presidential debate will change their candidates distance from 7ft to 12ft.

Today,  the debate for the South Carolina US Senate seat saw the candidates 13ft apart and also had a plexiglass divider.

Plexiglass apparently requested by Mr Harrison.

Will zoom be next?

RE: Debates and covid - OutsiderFan - 10-04-2020

We live in an Idiocracy.  Is there any reason the candidates must be on a stage together?

Of course there is no bigger idiot than the VPOTUS.  The POTUS is in the hospital in serious condition. As the next in-line the VPOTUS should be in Washington ready to take over if need be, not flying around the country doing campaign events. Not to mention, he should be quarantining anyway due to his contacts at the super spread event at Rose Garden.

And, even if he hasn't taken over for POTUS, he should have addressed the nation to assure everyone the government will function no matter what happens, and lay out the chains succession in a calm and measured way. Just another log thrown on the conflagration of incompetence by the current White House management.

I am sure if he had done that you would be greatly reassured.

Why on earth would Pence go on TV?  Trumps not incapacitated.  The 25th, to my knowledge, has not been invoked.  (Which is the only way he “takes over”) Doing what you suggest would have indicated panic.  No matter what he said. Talking about them chain of succession would have been the exactly the wrong thing to do.  And no VP wants to look like he’s hoping for the job.  Pence addressing the nation would have have been idiotic.

As for campaigning- the election is a month away. He has to campaign. Those traveling with him knowthe score – if they’re concerned they can resign. They’re not gonna push the election back of course. So as I said he’s got no choice.

I typically agree with you but boy do I disagree with you here. VPOTUS is not an idiot. He knows that if he showed any willingness to prepare for Trump's death that Trump would fire him. He has to loyally bide his time to appease his dear leader in order to stay in his good graces. He knows that if Trump dies that that will be his moment. But not a moment sooner. It's not about the country, it is about the Trump brand, and then it is about him.

This mentality is manifestly why we are in the disaster we are in. People treat the POTUS like a spoiled child and indulge his every whim, and or fear for their own asses over the interest of the country to enable him at every turn. It's just sickening to see a 74 year old child man ripping apart every last edifice of best practice governance, and how many people allow him to do it with impunity.

Pence speaking to the country to tell us how things work would be prudent. No, I would never in a billion years vote for him, but that doesn't mean he doesn't have a responsibility to make sure the American people are informed and that he and the administration are following proper procedures. Dexamethasone is known to impair judgement and cause psychotic episodes from what I have gathered.  Not speaking to us tells us the POTUS matter more than the country he is suppose to lead. That is not only wrong, but dangerous.

No, it would not be prudent.  Trump isn’t incapacitated. That was not the time for a VP to take center stage.  For obvious reasons.  And what is the “proper procedure“. He wasn’t shot. He’s not in the hospital under anesthesia. Indeed the only time the 25th has been invoked is when Bush went in for a colonoscopy was going under and signed the order so that Cheney would be in charge during the time that he was under anesthesia. This is not remotely like that.

As for “Telling us how things work” I have no idea what you mean. Was he supposed to give us a quick little civics lessons. It sound like a freaking vulture. There’s absolutely no reason for Pence to address the country. None.

BTW  if you wanna blame a president for being irresponsible in his dying days look at FDR. Truman didn’t even know about the Manhattan project. That was potentially dangerous .

VPs  are generally on the outside looking in. Hell, Truman had no idea of the Manhattan profect.  You think Johnson was in Kennedys inner circle?  And Trump wouldn’t fire him a month before the election.  He may want to, but....  It is not time for any VP to appear to be asserting control or discussing succession.  And that has nothing to be with Trumps proclivities.  No Pres would have their VP out front right now.

The people we should be hearing from are his drs and his chief of staff.

RE: Debates and covid - magnus - 10-05-2020

VP debate now to include plexiglass between participants and between participants and moderator.

https://www.politico.com/news/2020/10/05/plexiglass-harris-and-pence-vp-debate-426514

Not all parties supported this move.

RE: Debates and covid - dabigv13 - 10-05-2020

Plexiglass seems mostly like theater. Would be much happier if this was virtual or we could be convinced they are doing the right things with fans and ventilation.

RE: Debates and covid - BostonCard - 10-05-2020

That was my thought about Jaime Harrison.  At that distance, it would largely take an airborne rather than a droplet transmission for one participant to infect the other, and a plexiglass partition is not going to protect against airborne transmission (unless you had a plexiglass enclosure with independent ventilation).

Yeah, seems like they should just be in different rooms, which could then be different cities for all it matters.

RE: Debates and covid - chrisk - 10-05-2020

Cleveland Clinic turned out to be a tool of Trump. They did not verify his tests.

Now Trump has taken off his mask and shooting campaign videos on the WH balcony.

Are the production people getting battle pay?

RE: Debates and covid - BostonCard - 10-05-2020

Yeah, what is this mystery technology that has been available since the JFK/Nixon debate that allows the two candidates to participate in a debate from separate cities?

Will they get ANY pay?  If Trump loses on Nov 3rd I would doubt the campaign will pay any of its outstanding bills for things like this.

Sorry no money is left for your bill, but there is good news.  Thanks to your recent battle with COVID19, a gift from POTUS, you now have some antibodies that might help protect you from any additional exposures to the virus.

RE: Debates and covid - Goose - 10-05-2020

One big advantage of the candidates being in different rooms is that the other candidate's reaction, both visual and audio, can be removed from the screen when said candidate doesn't have the floor. That will result in no interruptions being possible. Normally such a process would not be required, but making it impossible to interrupt and badger your opponent can't be a bad thing.

RE: Debates and covid - dabigv13 - 10-05-2020

I'm very curious how they're going to test before the next debate, if Trump is healthy enough to debate. A properly administered PCR test 13 days from diagnosis will often be positive in covid patients. We don't know what this means in terms of infectivity. In terms of CDC guidance, they state you can be around others after 10 days from start of symptoms, as long as without fever and other symptoms improving. So Trump may request not to be tested at all. These guidelines don't apply to someone with severe covid, which it doesn't seem Trump has, though we do not have full information.

You know quite well that the number one qualification to being on Trump's team is to be a sycophant. By all means, it is worth attacking these character for their lack of character, but let's not act surprised when they do what they do. Just because they should do something doesn't mean they will, and that's what we've all seen from Trump's team from day one. That's why this entire administration is dangerous and why we cannot really know what happens if Trump goes down.
