Touchdown USC. I loved that still do.

I still prefer "Madsen stuffs it!  Madsen stuffs it! And.. he... was... fouled!"

RIP Murph.

Where are you Paul Carey. While Stanford looking for a miracle. Another great Murphy quote

"Touchdown!....Incomplete."

RE: It never gets old - Phogge - 10-06-2020

Great calls by Bob Fouts:

“Davis kicks... it’s... long enough... but it’s off to the left, and... short.”

“Kids, send away for your glossy 8 by 10 shots of all the Forty Niners with a brief biological story on the back.”

“Brodie throws, intercepted by Lane... he’s at the 35, the 40, the 45, the 50, the 55......”

Phogge Fouts sold me and I still have the photos

Do you believe in miracles?  Where are you Paul Carey . . .

There were so many great quotes from the URI end game (a cassette tape of which I played over and over again into oblivion).

One of my favorites was when Stanford had come all the way back and taken the lead.  Weems is on the line with Stanford up 2 and 13 seconds left and is shooting 1 and 1 (IIRC).  He makes the first.  As he is lining up the second, Platz says:  "If he makes this Stanford has one foot and all but the toes of the other in the state of Texas!"  (Or something close to that).  Great image.

Of course, Weems misses; URI dribbles up the court down 3 and Arthur Lee fouls Tyson Wheeler(?) while throwing up a desperation three-point prayer. Momentary panic as Murph is trying to sort what is going on as Wheeler goes to the line.

Platz:  "But Murph, this is hard to do.  Tyson Wheeler is a 66% FT shooter:  not 86%, not 76%, but 66%."  [I think those numbers were right . . . ].

Murph:  "He must make all 3 . . .

Clang, clang, intentional miss.

I felt badly for Wheeler - a great player who found the moment just too big.
But screw Jim Harrick, that whiny sore loser, and his team for exiting with no grace.

And btw, San Antone is still the best Stanford sports roadie of my lifetime.  The Final Four - especially at that locale - cannot be topped (though Orange Bowl in South Beach was pretty sweet, as is Pasadena on New Year's Day).

24-23 vs. USC in LA.  Greatest upset of all time, IMHO.

I also liked men's basketball going into Austin and defeating a Texas team that had only lost to #1 Kentucky.  And Texas had only one other game that was even close, against UConn.  It had been nearly a decade since Texas had lost to an unranked team at home.

teejers - That season and the Final Four in San Antonio was one I'll never forget. I used miles that got us to Dallas and then drove all the way to San Antonio for the Final Four and back. Was so bummed on the Kentucky game. We could have won and always thought if Ryan Mendez was given the shot we would have.

Loved Weems as a player, but he shot something like 6-23 in the game against Kentucky . . .

RE: It never gets old - fullmetal - 10-12-2020

My last memory of San Antonio was watching TCU speedsters run circles around our team.  Sigh.  Before that, it was the women's basketball team gamely trying to overcome the lack of Jayne Appel's ankle against an evil empire of UConn fans.

Everything else was fun though!

You said it BC. It never gets old. What Tavita said afterwards still makes me smile: It's one thing to hear 90,000 people screaming. It's another to hear 90,000 people STOP screaming.

RE: It never gets old - Spiny_Norman - 10-12-2020

Credit to Pete Arbogast, the longtime USC play by play announcer, who called out the USC team on air for leaving the field without the post-game handshake. Arbogast said, "I am embarrassed for my university."

No Stanford fan should ever have to pay for a drink in the state of Louisiana either. Just remind them of what the football team did on October 6, 2007. This was the reaction in Baton Rouge when the PA announced the final score from Los Angeles.
