Movie Theaters Reopened In San Mateo County - Genuine Realist - 10-07-2020
Cinemark has reopened a number of its cineplexes in San Mateo, welcome news. Popcorn and concessions also open, but masks in all public areas, and max capacity of 100 or 20%, whichever is less.
I'm interested, since moviegoing has always been a delight. But there is nothing I particularly want to see - 'Tenet' is the major attraction, Christopher Nolan's movie, and I am not a Nolan fan. Besides, i've been threatened with divorce or worse if I'm an early adopter.
Anyone tried it out?

60+" 4K TVs with stunning vibrancy are available for less than $400, so it was already getting tough to offer a compelling product. Now many movies are released online on the same day AND at home you don't have to wear a mask or worry about catching COVID19.
I would be more tempted to embrace a touch of COVID risk to see Big Game at Memorial stadium or the Pac-12 CG if Stanford was in that game, but beyond that I will continue in 2020 to watch my 4K TVs and enjoy my comfy furniture without the burdens of masks or the worries of COVID.
My assumption has been the first large group outing will be an outdoor live sporting event where fans and their participation are part of the overall experience. My hope is to see an NCAA tournament championship, with Stanford in that championship, in late Q1 2021 while wearing an N95 mask.

But I still enjoy the communal experience of the movies. Particularly the popcorn movies, the big entertainment releases, lately the Marvel and Star Wars franchises, and just about all comedies, are immensely enhanced by group viewing.
One of the ways Cinemark is trying out the new order, by the way, is to rent out a cineplex for $99.00, with some numbers restrictions. Sine base tickets for couple are already in the vicinity of $15-20, three or four couples might find it affordable. I'll try it out one of these days.

I am a big movie fan. I watched about 30 movies in theatres in 2019, in IMAX or in a Dolby theatre if available.
I haven’t watched any movies in the theatre in 2020, and I don’t plan to go until it’s prudent. If i could rent an IMAX theatre for a reasomable sum that’d be tempting but part of the fun is crowds. And anyway, most movies I have been looking forward to (Black Widow, Wonder Woman 1984) were pushed out.
I feel like I can just roll with whatever and adapt to new realities as needed. There are plenty of new, enjoyable hobbies away from crowds I can pick up. For one, I’ve been learning a new language, using a combination of textbooks and free apps. I have become a more flexible cook (substituting whatever is on hand due to less frequent grocery trips). I can cut my hair using only clippers and a mirror (though I started getting haircuts outdoors in July). I keep in touch with a wider areay of friends using Zoom, email and messaging.

In the early pandemic, movie theaters were struggling to fill seats; now they are struggling to fill screens, mostly due to the "tepid" results that Tenet got (I put "tepid" in quotes because it has made $300 million, but expectations were for 2-3x that). With the latest James Bond movie pushed back to April (at least), movie theaters have no content to show.
Your best bet, if you want a movie theater experience, is to go to the Drive In in San Jose.

On this point, the science, such as it is, is cautiously on the side of the reopening. It can't be said that either Newsom or the county authorities in San Mateo have been casual in dealing with Covid.
And yet here we are. I'm not rushing back. My wife is even more cautious. But though this is prudence. it's not quite as rationally based as earlier avoidance.
I'm going to wait a few weeks. If the regulations hold up, no clusters, no reversals, yes, I will go.
I'm flying on Friday to my granddaughter's birthday party in Burbank. That also turns out to be quite a bit safer than you might think. I picked up this link on a conservative site, but the JAMA network seems legitimate enough and the article is rationally phrased. It makes me curious about the dynamics of theater ventilation.

Went to a movie Sat night. Theater nearly empty. It’s one of those new theaters where you sit in what are essentially couches and things are spread apart anyway so very little concern in that vein. Masks worn. I saw Tenet. It sucks don’t bother.

Anecdotal on airports, but both my wife and a client flew to Seattle in last couple months. Both were surprised/almost shocked at how active the Seattle airport was, especially in comparison to San Jose - which was a ghost town, even last Wednesday afternoon.
Heading to Chicago shortly from SFO. Hope they aren't crowded. . .

I flew to Detroit in Mid August. SFO was a ghost town. Detroit was much more crowded. Never felt uncomfortable. Easy to find a spot to get away. Flew Delta. They limit capacity to around 60% no middle seats handing out wipes everybody masked no food service except a bag of water and some chips didn’t feel the least bit uncomfortable.

In February, I happened to sign up with MHZ Networks, an over-the-net LARGE collection (> 50, maybe 100) of European TV series, from a number of countries. Good way to work on at least understanding any of a variety of languages. (The subtitles are actually good, not just literal translations.) My wife & I watch a couple of hours every night, and I'm not one to watch TV.

On binge watch during SiP front, I highly recommend these series:
1. The Night Manager (1 season);
2. Berlin Station (3 seasons);
3. Broadchurch (2 or 3 seasons);
4. The Tunnel
5. The Last Kingdom (Uhtred, Son of Uhtred). GoT light, but entertaining.
Less enamored with, but still pretty good, The Forgotten.
Based on most recent Emmy's, I dove into Succession. Really disappointed. Maybe it's just I'm so turned off by the lifestyles of the Uber Rich and Uber Obnoxious. But even putting that aside, there isn't a redeeming character in the series, as far as I can tell.

I endorse the Night Manager.
If you liked the Tunnel, you might like the original, The Bridge (2011), better. Instead of the murder taking place in the Channel Tunnel between and featuring British and French detectives, The Bridge takes place on the Bridge (duh) connecting Denmark and Sweden. The Danish/Swedish cultural differences are very interesting, though of course it plays heavily on stereotypes. And I have been very partial to Nordic murder series (I would put a plug in here for Wallander, which is a British production). I think there are four seasons of The Bridge.
Some other favorites:
Luther (featuring Idris Elba, who goes from Baltimore drug kingpin in The Wire, to British cop in Luther); still waiting for him to be the next Bond
Casa de Papel (the Spanish name, known as Money Heist in English)
Fauda (an Israeli series about the Mossad)
Tehran (just started it, on AppleTV+)

I flew Delta out of Detroit an awful lot, given that it's a hub. They do a very good job, and they follow you on social media. The Delta terminal at DTW is quite nice, the other terminal, not so much.

I really liked Broadchurch, the first two seasons. Didn't care for the American version, "Gracepoint" which also stars David Tennant. Not a bad series, but not great. Didn't see your others.
Binged Black Mirror, Ozark, wife is binging Lucifer and Blacklist. Looking forward to Westworld. Curious about The Boys. Think Stranger Things is highly overrated.

We really liked Ozark, and the Night Manager ... Teheran is really interesting, not yet fully available ... and for not in English, Money Heist, the Bridge, Fortitude, Occupied, Berlin Station, Trapped, Valhalla, Lilyhammer, Nobel, Ragnarok (a pattern of Norwegian there, not for any reason except good plots and interesting characters) ...

If you liked the Tunnel, you might like the original, The Bridge (2011), better. Instead of the murder taking place in the Channel Tunnel between and featuring British and French detectives, The Bridge takes place on the Bridge (duh) connecting Denmark and Sweden. The Danish/Swedish cultural differences are very interesting, though of course it plays heavily on stereotypes. And I have been very partial to Nordic murder series (I would put a plug in here for Wallander, which is a British production). I think there are four seasons of The Bridge.
Some other favorites:
Luther (featuring Idris Elba, who goes from Baltimore drug kingpin in The Wire, to British cop in Luther); still waiting for him to be the next Bond
Casa de Papel (the Spanish name, known as Money Heist in English)
Fauda (an Israeli series about the Mossad)
